Science & Technology Japan’s Sharp Electronics Corp. is introducing two new modules specifically suited for the North and South Ameri- can markets, according to the company’s sales team. However, since Sharp is selling the modules worldwide through its dealers, it seems likely they will also be available outside the Americas. The company says it will not offer service outside of the Americas. 66 The new additions will be the most powerful Sharp modules in North and South America at 230 and 235 W of power, and efficiencies of more than 14 percent. The NU-U230F3 and NU-U235F1 monocrystalline modules have MC4 connectors and UL certification. The units are comparable with the ND-V230/ A1 and ND-F230/A1 models available on the European market, although those modules made with multicrystalline Judging by technology alone, SunEdison Services offers what appears to be a fairly standard monitoring system designed for commercial and utility-scale customers. The Beltsville, Maryland company designed its system to be compatible with many of the top-selling inverters, and to genera- te up-to-the-minute data about how the PV system is functioning. One feature al- lows the monitoring system, called the Su- nEdison Energy and Environmental Data System (SEEDS), to churn out billing information in 15-minute intervals. This might be more useful for utilities than commercial customers. At $1,599, the monitoring system may be priced beyond the reach of many customers. But along with the SEEDS monitoring system, SunEdison also offers a hands-on service that takes care of nearly every aspect of managing a large PV system. The devices, the first in the company’s Sunway M XS range, are transformerless string inverters. The new models, the M XS 5000TL, M XS 6000TL, and M XS 7500TL will have DC nominal powers of 5.2, 6.3, and 7.8 kW, respectively. The maximum conversion efficiency of the three units ranges between 97.3 and 97.5 percent. The devices’ MPP voltage range is 330 to 700 V. A maximum of four strings can be connected to the inverter. The housing, which comes in red, white, blue, and gray, has an IP65 protection type. Tigo Energy says it is working with leading module manufacturers to integrate its power optimizer technology con- veniently inside the module’s junction box. For now, the Silicon Valley company offers two small devices that can be affixed to any module, regardless of output voltage or nominal power rating. The Modu- le Maximizer-ES attaches to modules that are connected in series. Another model, the Module Maximizer-EP, uses galvanic isolation to facilitate use with building in- tegrated PV, and other complex systems. Tigo has tried to differentiate its products from similar optimizers on the market through their simplicity. The company has placed the maximum power point (MPP) tracking functionality to a control unit, which limits the number of elec- tronic devices on the roof. Future plans Princeton Power Systems’ (PPS) GTIB 480-100 inverter received UL certification and went straight to market in June. So far, it has sold mainly in just four northeastern US states: New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Delawa- re. But PPS is eyeing other venues for its $50,000 product, including the lucrative Californian market. The GTIB 480-100 was not developed exclusively for the PV industry. PPS touts the product’s versatility as a microgrid that can deliver power to military person- nel on the go (PPS lists several military projects for government agencies and pri- vate contractors on its website). The microgrid might not have any commercial applications, but integrators and system operators can still benefit from the GTIB 480-100’s versatility: its backup power capacity. Chris Mangone, a PPS business development associate, says the GTIB 480-100 can provide about three hours of call for streamlin- ing the components on the maximizer unit’s PC board to make it even sim- pler. Suggested retail price for each MM-ES and MM- EP maximizer is $56. Tigo offers a centralized monitoring and control system called the Maximizer Management Unit (MMU). This compact unit measures 245 x 150 x 80 mm, and can support up to 1,000 Module Maximizers. The company also offers an online service, called MaxiManager Soft- ware, which costs $350 for systems that are 10 kW or smaller. Tigo says its systems, if deployed together, can boost output in optimal commercial systems by 6 to 10 percent. PPS isn’t the only inverter maker that provides battery backup, but the company is clearly staking out a strategic position by including this feature in its standard product. According to the technical datasheet, the GTIB 480-100 has 98 percent peak efficiency. PPS credits advanced MPPT tracking as well as evening auto- disconnect, and daytime auto-power-up, for the high efficiency. PPS has grown consid- erably since it was founded eight years ago in a Princ- eton University dorm room, and the company is poised for more growth in the near future. Mangone says PPS is aim- ing to open a new manufacturing facility in New Jersey in about three years.
