Self-Clinching fasteners are used in a multitude of applications: aircraft and spacecraft
componentry, automobiles, off-the-road vehicles, other transportation equipment, agriculture
machinery, electronic and electrical equipment, business machines, industrial and
consumer appliances, recreational devices, vending machines, metal furniture - wherever
load-bearing threads must be designed into ductile metal sheet too thin to thread.
Simple, quick, low-cost installation
Self-Clinching fasteners are installed in punched or drilled holes simply by squeezing
them in with any adjustable force, parallel-acting mechanical, hydraulic, or pneumatic
press. The shanks of Self-Clinching fasteners are round, and act as their own pilots. No
indexing is required. Several fasteners may be installed with a single squeeze, effecting
notable economies in assembly.
No secondary operations or refinishing required
Self-Clinching fasteners maintain thread integrity while being squeezed in. Neither
retapping or reclinching is necessary. No grinding or burnishing is needed either, since
the anvil side of the sheet remains flush. Self-Clinching fasteners may be installed before
or after surfaces are finished. They will not distort or discolour painted or lacquered panels.
High torque-out and push-out resistance
When Self-Clinching fasteners are squeezed into thin sheet, the steel, aluminum, copper,
brass, or other ductile matrix metal flows into undercut, knurled, or lugged surfaces, giving
them the push-out and torque-out strengths the fasteners need to stay in place all down
the production line and under conditions of end use.
The correct assembly of machine screws
to Self-Clinching nuts (Page C162), is
from the anvil side.
