only a screwdriver or a few select
wrenches. All of the special tools
your car needed, though you could
find them online, were swiftly
stowed away at the dealerships
and special maintenance shops.
My tool kit requires a little more
than just wrenches and screwdrivers,
because I have been known to
break down on the side of the open
road, often! Along with everything
that came in the original tool kit,
I have an extra set of spark plugs,
a small screwdriver set (for those
hard-to-reach places), a wire crimping
set with a box of connectors and
female ends, a socket wrench with
10mm, 13mm, 15mm, and 17mm
sockets, and a tire iron. Extra items
I have acquired, as needed, include
a magnetic flashlight (for light,
and those pesky washers), electrical
tape, zip ties (though I don’t condone
the use of them as a permanent

a first aid kit. For my water-cooled
Porsche, I carry all this and a bottle
of quick-seal head gasket repair --
again just in case. I know, it’s a long
list, but with the right sized bag,
you can fit it all, and still make the
interior space of the trunk look big
enough to fit a full set of golf clubs.
Another item that I don’t necessarily
take out with me daily, but
that I do use while working on my
cars, is my Kindle Fire. Surprisingly,
the tablet, whether you
prefer Apple, Google, or Amazon,
has snuck its way into the garage
of many mechanics. Having the
device nearby lets me easily look up
problems, questions, and technical
articles found on the various
internet forums and websites. This
not only saves paper, but means
that I can connect with millions
of people, and can troubleshoot
the exact issues my cars are facing
with the touch of a finger, in real
time! There are even downloadable
software programs (for example,
one known as Porsche Pet) that tear
apart every aspect of your vehicle;
giving you dimensions, sizes, and
even the part numbers of everything,
all the way down to the individual
nuts and bolts of the engine.
