Founders’ Day 2013: A Night at the NYLO By Carey Spreen Photos by the Author Maverick Region’s fifty-first annual banquet was a return to our more typical end-of-the-year celebration after last year’s 50th Anniversary blowout at Texas Motor Speedway. But it was no less enjoyable! This year, Founders’ Day was held at the NYLO Hotel in Las Colinas. I personally had never heard of the NYLO Hotel franchise (yeah, I need to get out more), and was pleasantly surprised by its distinctly non-traditional take on how a hotel should look and feel. It was an excellent location for Founders’ Day 2013. Credit goes to Maverick Region Social Chair Tracy Robertson and her team for choosing this venue, which, among other things, offered free coned-off parking for our prized vehicles. President John Hamilton made the customary award presentations, including the Richard F. Selcer Memorial Award, which this year went to Time Trial and Autocross Chair Travis Howard, who richly deserved the recognition. Also awarded (in John presenting Mark Hanna with his 30-year certificate 16 December John announcing Travis Howard as the Selcer Award winner for 2013 absentia) was the Gregg Murrell Driving Enthusiast Trophy, to 2012 (and much of 2013) Drivers’ Education Chair Lori Mauthe, who did a great job growing the series and implementing some fresh ideas. John also made a special presentation to Mark Hanna for his 30 years of service with PCA. David and Tracy Robertson Guest Speaker Steve Krysil, PCNA Regional Manager, is always chock full of information that he can’t share officially, but he does his best to let us know what is coming down the Autobahn in the near future. He had lots of photos and a couple of videos, including one of the breathtakingly fast 918 Spyder at speed at the Nürburgring. You can have one too for under $900,000! During the evening, of course, the Silent Auction went on, well, silently, with proceeds benefitting our perennial charity, the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House. The food was quite good, the location was inspired, and the company of like-minded enthusiasts was second to none. A fitting send-off to another successful year for the Maverick Region!
