Maverick Region Club Race: Texas Showdown at Eagles Canyon By Wendy Shoffit, Club Race Registrar Photos by Lynn Friedman, Zone 5 Representative In 1994, Maverick Region hosted its first Club Race event at the Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma. It wasn’t until 2001 that we had our own track locally to have a race. That was when Texas Motor Speedway came along with their road course, utilizing most of the oval as well. We held the event there for four years until MotorSport Ranch came along, which proved to be a safer and more interesting track for drivers. Then, it became really exciting when Eagles Canyon Raceway opened in 2007 and gave us a new sandbox to play in for 2008. We stayed there for a few years and then flipped back and forth to MotorSport Ranch. It’s been great to have a choice of venues to entertain racers from around the country. This year’s event was at Eagles Canyon on October 26-27. Despite some grumbling about track bumpiness, we had nearly 50 racers in attendance from as far as Kansas, Colorado, and Las Vegas, Nevada! They all came to compete in one of the last races of the year for points. Last year the Club Racing program made the change to have points Grid crew Matt Platts, Robyn Howard, and Gridmaster Travis Howard 22 <strong>December</strong> races and assign national winners. In 2012 we had four Mavericks win national championships (out of 39 classes) and a total of 9 podium finishers. Not too shabby! Go Mavs! It was a soggy Saturday start but the weather improved as the weekend went on In addition to the Club Race, we had a solo-only Drivers’ Education event with just over 50 participants. Everyone seemed to have a great time and enjoyed tons of driving time. The weather cooperated with us for the most part, with only a few sprinkles on Saturday. Temperatures were near perfect, which our German cars absolutely loved! Everyone behaved themselves and we only had a very few incidents on track. Some people, who will remain nameless, tried to help the track by mowing some of the tall grass, but we assured them it wasn’t necessary. Others thought the track could use some extra oil, but again . . . no need! It had plenty, thank you. Generally, though, it was just great racing in a very gentlemanly sport. Congratulations to the race winners and even more so to the TEN Mavericks who ended up with podium finishes nationally for <strong>2013</strong>, including four class winners! The Gearhead Award is presented to someone faced with adversity, such as major mechanical failure, and persevered through it. This year it was awarded to a reportedly exhausted but happy Terry Morris. Thanks to the wonderful local race staff we have to put on this great event year after year.
