Maverick Minutes: November Board Meeting By Renee Farinella, Region Secretary November 6, 2013 Club President John Hamilton began the meeting at 7:10 by acknowledging the efforts around and success of the Founders’ Day event, held Saturday night, November 2 at the NYLO Hotel in Irving. He said he thought the venue was great and gave kudos to Social Chair Tracy Robertson on a great job creating value for the membership with visibility, charity, fun gear to bid on, and an opportunity to build the friendships part of “It’s not just about the cars…”. Hence, Tracy was selected as Maverick of the Month! We all appreciate your talents and hard work! Tracy’s husband David helped out at the event with the Porsche presentation and was instrumental in resolving some technical issues. A lot of folks from Club Racing were there; not our customary social event attendees. Club Race Registrar Wendy Shoffit said that, in her efforts to let people know about Founders’ Day, she discovered that there were many previous commitments, as she called everyone she knew. Membership Co-Chair Susan Froehlich said that she believes it’s not the amount of marketing, but how you publicize it. Susan suggested “one really valuable item” be offered at the auction as more of a draw to create greater interest. John said we will do an “after-action” review and evaluation on what improvements can be made for next year, and asked that all ideas be sent to him or Tracy. John said two awards were given at Founders’ Day. John presented the Greg Murrell award for Driver Enthusiasm to former DE chair Lori Mauthe (in absentia), and 6 December the Richard F. Selcer Award to AX/TT chair Travis Howard. We were all glad to see Robyn Howard able to join the celebration, despite her recent neck surgery. Hoping you heal quickly, Robyn! Next up was DE Equipment Manager Luke Edson, who was present to offer insights and support, but did not have a specific report this month. Then Membership Co-Chairs Susan and Tom Froehlich were pleased to report another month’s gain in new club sign-ups and renewals, bringing us to yet another all-time high of 2281 members, including affiliates! They mentioned that PCA National is still working on nailing down the discount-program through dealerships. Locally, Autobahn Porsche is taking the lead. John asked that a follow-up discussion take place to ensure the program is effectively positioned and implemented for the Mavericks. Social Chair Tracy Robertson began her full report by mentioning that we did well with the auction; one of the main purposes of the Founders’ Day event is charity. Having had a great variety of over 100 auction items, we will be able to remit $3,500 to our club charity the Huffaker-Hughes Hope House! Well done everyone! Also, Tracy created some memento-worthy Thank You cards that board members signed to be sent to contributors. Tracy reminded everyone that there are Raffle tickets available for sale for $50 each for the oneyear lease of the newest Porsche model, the 2014 Macan. A portion of the proceeds goes to the Hope Shelter. The drawing will take place at the New/All Member Party on Saturday, January 25 at Hackberry Creek Country Club in Irving. The various chairs are working on coordinating their functions for this upcoming year’s Calendar. Thank you for managing the Calendar, Brendan Eagan. Fun Holiday-inspired Porsche pictures you posted, by the way! Glad I have a convertible, to make the Christmas tree transport, not just less scratch-at-risk, but more spectacular. Might very well add some lights and a big bag of gifts and make that my Christmas card! John Hamilton then gave Vice President Gareth Maurice’s report, as he was unable to attend. Insurance is all current, with the exception of the “Frick’n Toy Run” Sunday Drive on December 8, which is also benefiting the Hope House. This will be secured shortly. Also, Treasurer Jim Falgout was not present, but reported to John that we are in excellent financial shape. I could not help but think this is an exciting trajectory continuing by excellence in responsibility, as it will help facilitate mobility on how successfully we have the opportunity to grow the club in valuable ways. Our new Driver Education Chair, Chris Tabor, has jumped in with both feet and pulled together a pro forma report on the November 9 one-day DE event, which will be the last one of the season. Participation remains strong, with 95 confirmed (at this writing) and 118 registered. Chris continued by saying that he is working on 2014 dates and will get with Travis Howard to ensure no Autocross or Time Trial conflicts. Chris is proposing eight DEs, up from six this year, as demand is increasing; three would be oneday events, with a new option for
instructed students (Green and non-solo Blue groups) to register for Saturday only. I can hardly wait for next year! So glad more dates will be offered. Stay tuned!! Details TBD. Chris has some additional proposed changes. For example, through his interest in designing a new HPDE logo, he discovered that there is a national contest; Chris asked me to submit a design, and I am honored to be recruited to help with this opportunity. Chris then mentioned that we are in need of new radios, as our communications systems are crucial to our safety. In his fiscally responsible due-diligence, he has three bids out. Twenty-four to thirty Motorola CP2s are his preference; they go for about $200 each plus accoutrements, although some cost can be recovered from selling our current radio gear. He is pulling a formal proposal together for board review at the December board meeting. Chris asked for help from everyone on his next agenda item; he wants to create a greater level of support and camaraderie between the drivers and the teams. We are glad you are here, Chris, and look forward to more great member-benefiting, goal-accomplishing, servantleadership from you and all who get to help with contributing to actualizing that vision for our club. Sunday Drive Tourmeister John Harvey expressed how much he was looking forward to the Fort Richardson Drive on November 17, as he will be sporting period attire (looking forward to the photo op on that event!). He and his team finished mapping the route for the aforementioned Toy Run on December 8 as well. We will have the opportunity to give $25 gift cards, in addition to bringing an unwrapped toy. Prospective Rally Co-Chair Don Sebert is working on developing a Rally group, and plans to meet with former Rally Chair Carey Spreen as well as George Luxbacher and Tracy Robertson, both of whom also have expressed interest in reviving Rallying in our region. My Secretary report was next: It was great to see everyone that was able to be at Founders’ Day! We had a great time. I noted that By-law change/update proposals will be ready at the December meeting; I mentioned my offer to help with the DE group, developing Sunday Drive visibility/ interest/participation, and gave congratulations in welcoming our 2014 Secretary, Wendy Shoffit.
