TRAVELLIVE 11-2016

My two little nieces are giggling with each other, building their “old” snowman. However severe winter is, it brings something miraculous to little kids. They are excited to go around, showing off their colorful new winter clothes. They look like pretty bears with the wool gloves and hat that their grandmother knitted for them. And the happiness of an adult like me is watching them and seeing enjoyment sparkle in their eyes. I love curling up in a small corner of Hanoi, sipping a cup of hot chocolate with sweet marshmallow. Just a sip can warm up your entire winter. This winter, my family is travelling to a foreign country in which winter is far different from that in Hanoi. Outside the hotel, where my children are playing, snow has already covered the entire roof, putting its white coat on the land, trees, and fields. And who doesn’t love snow? But suddenly I miss my Hanoi with bitter winds which usually chill while I am strolling down narrow streets. Losing my train of thoughts, when I look back, the children have finished their snowman and start playing with snowflakes in various shapes. I just relax and silently take in the winter far from home. And you, have you prepared for your winder journey? Don’t hesitate to share it with us!

LISTEN TO THE SOUNDS OF
NATURE ON MOUNT ROKKO
It’s said that Japan is the country with the
most appreciation for nature in the world.
Japanese people are attentive and create
excellent tools to listen to the sounds
of water, smell the winds, and feel the
sunshine. There is one shrine I love with bamboo
planted near a well. Just put the bamboo to your
ear andlisten to the sounds da dee da as the water
“sings” its song in the well. How magical it is!
Kobe in Kansai is known to most visitors as a harbor
city, but for me, the mountains are its most special
gifts. As a part of a mountain range stretching along
the southeast behind Kobe, the Rokko Mountains,
with its highest mount - Rokko Saikoho at the height
of 931m, is a wonderful place to contemplate the
beauty of nature. Silently stand on the peak for hours
and feel the city changes its appearance after sunrise
or peer over to Osaka’s islands far away. Here, you
should visit the herb gardens, museums, and hot
springs. You might as well try skiing if you’re here
during winter.
Located on Mount Rokko, the Rokko Shidare
astronomical observatory which is less popular with
visitors is a must-visit destination. Designed by
Hiroshi Sambuichi, who used to be a lecturer at the
Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Rokko Shidare
is a contemporary intellectual property combining
the main elements of air, water, and soil. Thanks to
its honeycomb design, it looks like a giant snowflake
which impresses everyone visiting in winter. What
could be better than listening to the whispers of
nature and feeling the magic of 4 seasons while
watching stars through windows in the clouds?
