What you will study: ‣ IGCSE topics: Year 9 Chemistry o States of matter o Elements, Compounds and Mixtures o Atomic structure o The Periodic Table o Acids, Alkalis and Titrations o Reactivity series Teaching approaches: This is a practically based course that incorporates the use of ICT such as data logging. Students work both individually and in groups. They also carry out their own research at times using the library and computer rooms. They prepare wall displays and do mini presentations to the class. Year 9 Physics What you will study: ‣ IGCSE topics: o o o o o o o Conduction, Convection and Radiation Energy Transfers and Efficiency Gravitational Potential Energy and Kinetic Energy Speed and acceleration Motion graphs Forces and their effects Waves Teaching approaches: You will receive clear instruction on the basic facts and principles of each topic. You will have plenty of practice in answering questions on the topic in order to develop your understanding. Numerical calculations and graphical analysis will play a significant role in some areas of the course. Most of the topics will involve a series of experiments that you will carry out, particularly in the topic of forces and motion. You will have an opportunity to explore additional aspects of each topic for yourself. Many lessons involve varied activities pursued in small groups. 99
How you will be assessed in Biology, Chemistry and Physics: You will have end of unit tests regularly throughout the year. There will be an end of year test covering all the work studies in each subject. How you will be grouped: In Year 9 all of the teaching groups are in sets. Test results will be recorded and used to decide current, and future, setting in Science. Specialist equipment: When carrying out practical work where chemicals or dissections are involved you will be expected to wear protective laboratory aprons and safety goggles. We provide these. You should always carry with you basic school equipment i.e. pens (blue or black), pencil, rubber, ruler and a pencil sharpener; however, in Year 9 we would expect you to have a protractor, compass and a calculator. 100
