Much like sustainability at Eskom or JZ’s S conscience, there is simply no such thing. Families. Marriages. Forever friendships. These presumably unbreakable relations have, at one time or another, been the victim of bakkie prejudice in South Africa. It’s far more poisonous than any passenger vehicle or performance car petrolhead bias. “I heard you bought one of those (insert Hilux/Ranger). Sorry, you’re no longer welcome at our KZN coastal retreat this Christmas.” VW’s Amarok has been the most maligned of South African double-cabs. Mzansi gravel motorists have an issue with Amarok, not so much the bakkie – but its engine. The nauseating ‘only milk and Amaroks come in 2-litre configuration,’ joke is weak but became uncontested truth. I say became, because VW’s now done what every Hilux and Ranger owner secretly feared they would eventually find the time to do: stroke Amarok’s from 2-litres of four to 3-litres of six. Those deriding Amarok 2-litre jokes were merely the anxiety of anticipation, not knowing when VW’s engineers, amongst the avalanche of development work they’re tasked with, would eventually remember they have a terrifically potent 3-litre V6 turbodiesel, which mates quite perfectly with Amarok’s 8-speed ZF auto and VW’s 4Motion system. Amarok is not our first big-six double-cab with passenger car cabin bits. There have been V6 turbodiesel doublecabs in South Africa before. Well, there’s been one: Nissan’s 3.0 DCi V6, which was an awesome powerful thing when released to dealers in 2011 but also generated many three-letter acronyms with its price, the first bakkie to retail beyond that psychological R500k barrier. For the privilege of commanding 165kW and 550Nm from behind a helm that’s nearly as comfortable and ergonomically all-things to most-people as current Polo, you’ll pay more than R700k. If that thought troubles you, there are unique features of the Amarok to consider. And they’re not inconsequential things such as its infotainment or those generously sized door-pocket stowage mouldings, which ironically, house 2-litre drink containers with ease. SUVs might be a global phenomenon, but bakkies have and always will be the anchor of local gravel travel vehicle sales. Why not build a bakkie with all the drivetrain and cabin benefits of an SUV, and exchange those hatefully superfluous third-row seats for an open loadbay people will use? VW has. Dust seepage. Shutline and strut rattles. The agony of packing. Disgraceful mess in case of a fluid spill inside. These are all hateful realities of owning an SUV
