(Antonín Dvořák)
(will replace H 1780)
In preparation
Dvořak's Piano Concerto in
G minor Op. 33 (1876) acquired
a reputation as a thankless,
pianistically difficult and
ineffective work and has
therefore led a wallflower
existence in the shadow of his
Violin and Cello Concertos. Today,
it is considered inadvisable to
‘remedy’ Dvořak’s music in any
way, and we prefer to return
unconditionally to the authentic
text, avoiding all adjustments
and ‘improvements’.
This new edition proceeds from
the autograph score and the
complete printed edition issued
by Hainauer of Breslau in 1883. It
also includes an edition of the
composer’s original piano
reduction, with a second piano
taking the place of the orchestra.
Urtext / Eds. L. Faltus,
Preface by J. Procházková
BA 9535
score and parts in
slipcover
The Capriccio was written in
the autumn of 1926 at the suggestion
of the pianist Otakar
Hollmann, an invalid from the
First World War. Like his contemporary
Paul Wittgenstein,
Hollmann urged composers to
write something for piano left
hand; he succeeded in persuading
Bohuslav Martinů, Erwin
Schulhoff and Janáček to do
this. Janáček did not want, as
he put it, to compose a “dance
for one leg”, but finally wrote
a four-movement work with
associations to military music.
