Piano Duet)
Vyšehrad and Vltava (The
Moldau), the first two
symphonic poems of the sixpart
cycle My Country, were
composed in quick succession
in 1874.
They were first published in
the composer’s arrangement
four hands in December 1879,
followed by the score and
orchestral parts, which were
proofread by Smetana himself,
in the first half of 1880.
Owing to the large number of
misprints in the Urbánek first
edition of The Moldau, Hugh
Macdonald has based his new
edition on the autograph score,
with cross-references to the
first edition and the composer’s
own version for piano duet.
To appear in December 2017
Smetana composed Šárka,
the third work of the cycle My
Country, in January and February
1875. While the composer's own
arrangement four hands was
published by Urbánek in 1880,
the score was not printed
until 1888, four years after the
composer's death.
Due to the grave defects of the
posthumous first edition of the
score, the editor assessed the
main source to be the autograph
score with markings by conductor
Adolf Čech, who headed the
premiere of Šárka on 17 March
1877. The autograph and printed
versions for piano duet served as
referential sources.
First scholarly-critical edition of “Asrael”
the famous symphony in memory of Dvořák and his daughter
“Asrael” Symphony Op. 27
Urtext / Ed. J. Hájek
BA 9532 score ♦
(replaces H 3978)
To appear in December 2017
When Antonín Dvořák died
on 1 May 1904, his son-in-law
Josef Suk decided to honour
his memory with a funeral
symphony. Suk began drafting
his second symphony around
February 1905, but his work
was interrupted by another
tragedy – the death of his
beloved wife Otilie. This event
had a significant impact on
the composition (he discarded
his initial draft of the fourth
movement and replaced it
with a completely new one).
The five-movement symphony
named after the Angel of Death
is dedicated to Dvořák and his
daughter.
“Asrael” Symphony was
premiered in the National
Theatre in Prague on 3 February
1907 under the baton of Karel
Kovařovic. The score was
published by Breitkopf & Härtel
in Leipzig that very year, the
piano reduction by Roman
Veselý found its way to print five
years later.
The main source of the
present edition is the first
print, supplemented by Suk’s
September 1921 corrections,
which were sparked by Václav
Talich, chief conductor of the
Czech Philharmonic. Talich
made note of the corrections
in his own printed copy of the
score. The biggest change is the
addition of the fifth and sixth
horn ad libitum to the orchestra.
