Martinů was often inspired by
Czech and Moravian folk music
in his compositions. However,
in the late 1950s his intense
focus on the poems of Bureš,
which drew on folk customs, had
another, personal dimension.

Through these four cantatas,
Martinů could return to his
homeland at least in a spiritual
way. The cantatas are primarily
choral works augmented
with solo voices or minor
instrumental accompaniment.
The need for a critical edition of
these cantatas stems from the
fact that the composer did not
participate in the publication of
any of them, aside from his
cursory post-publication proofreading
of Opening of the Springs.
The previous editions of these
works contained numerous
minor errors, inconsistencies and
solutions that went against the
intentions of the composer.

For fourteen long years Martinů
mused over a composition
“of the genre of Cavalieri's
‘Rappresentatione di anima e
di corpo'”, before finally composing
his masterly choral work
at the turn of December 1954
and January 1955, thus creating
one of the most impressive
choral scores of the 20th century.
He compiled the libretto
from the texts of one of the
oldest extant works of literature,
the Ancient Babylonian Epic
of Gilgamesh.
The greatest contribution of
this critical edition is the discovery
and first publication of
the composer's detailed requirements
for a semi-theatrical
staging of the work and the
extension of the Narrator's role
in accordance with Martinů's
original intentions.
