The Bohemian composer Jan<br />

Křtitel Vaňhal/Johann Baptist<br />

Vanhal (1739–<strong>18</strong>13) settled in<br />

Vienna around 1763. There<br />

he wrote several concertos<br />

for various instruments, of<br />

which two for viola have<br />

survived. Both are evidently<br />

not original compositions, but<br />

arrangements of Vaňhal's own<br />

works by his contemporaries.<br />

The Viola Concerto in C major is<br />

based on Vaňhal's cello concerto<br />

in the same key.<br />

In <strong>18</strong>91 Dvořák arranged the<br />

final, eighth dance of his<br />

popular first set of the Slavonic<br />

Dances Op. 46 for violoncello<br />

and piano. The <strong>Czech</strong> composer<br />

Jiří Gemrot (b. 1957) has<br />

followed his example and<br />

has arranged the remaining<br />

dances for the same scoring.<br />

However in order to approach<br />

Dvořák's ideal sound Gemrot<br />

based his arrangements on the<br />

composer's orchestral score.<br />

Dvořák's own arrangement of<br />

Slavonic Dance No. 8 has been<br />

taken from the ADCE IV/3 (see<br />

Cello Compositions H 5305).<br />
