songs in the first January week
Dvořák composed the song
cycle Gypsy Songs Op. 55 to
the words by Czech poet Adolf
Heyduk in early 1880 by request
of the tenor Gustav Walter, a
member of the Vienna Court
Opera, to whom the cycle is
dedicated. Dvořák wrote the
music directly for the German
translations of the poems,
which were provided for this
purpose by the poet himself.
The songs were first published
by Simrock in German in
summer 1880; the same
publisher released another
version including lyrics in
Czech and English a year later.
Editor Veronika Vejvodová
