Mr Gonzalez is walking the famous pilgrimage route, Camino de Santiago, to raise money for his church on the Johnstone Road, Bridge of Weir. Asked why this pilgrimage route Mr Gonzalez said, “This is considered one of the most important pilgrimages after Jerusalem. The route I am taking is called the Via de la Plata and will take me through woodlands, farmlands and little villages along the way. It is very beautiful but far from an easy walk!” I will be averaging about 20km each day – which isn’t too much. I have certainly enjoyed training for the pilgrimage on Renfrewshire’s beautiful countryside walks – with walking boots from here in Scotland - so they should do the job nicely,” added Mr Gonzalez. Mr Gonzalez hopes to raise over £1,000 and if people wish to sponsor him they can email him on hellerg@hotmail.com or call 01505 872 961. bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir The result of the council elections across the country was great for the Conservatives and in my ward, now Ward 11, I received 2,552 votes which I am very pleased with and I would like to offer a huge debt of gratitude to all my helpers and supporters over the weeks prior to the election as I couldn’t have done it without all their help. From the fi lling in forms, sorting leafl ets, going round the doors, standing at the polling stations and being at the fi nal count it all went so well. We now have 8 Conservative councillors in Renfrewshire and came so very close to having a further 3 or 4. This result is quite exceptional. The other day we had our fi rst full meeting of the newly elected Renfrewshire council which saw the formation of an SNP minority administration. By abstaining on a vote for positions such as provost Scottish Conservative councillors sensibly put Renfrewshire fi rst to allow a working administration to be formed quickly. We are taking a mature and pragmatic approach to representing our constituents. We were elected to serve the interests of our communities and not to engage in pointless arguments. Scottish Conservatives are now on every council committee and we will use our infl uence to stand up for Renfrewshire, challenge the SNP and Labour and get the best services for hardworking families. It is a great honour to once again represent the communities of Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village on Inverclyde Council. Can I congratulate my fellow Ward 1 Councillors, Christopher Curley and David Wilson, on their election. I look forward to working with them both during the next fi ve years. The only Council meeting in May was the statutory meeting to elect the Provost, Deputy Provost and senior Councillors and to make appointments to Committees and outside bodies. At the time of writing this column the outcome of the meeting was uncertain due to the fact no party has an over all majority on the Council. I will report on the outcome in my next column. The consultation on the Main Issues Report for the Inverclyde Local Development Plan has certainly caused a considerable amount of angst among some residents of Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s over potential housing development sites. It is important to stress that the views of everyone who responded to the consultation will be taken on board before any decisions are made. I certainly recognise the importance of protecting the uniqueness of both villages. The Kilmacolm Twinning Society welcomed a group of 7 people from Merignies, including Mayor Francis Melon, on the weekend of the Agricultural Show. I was pleased to attend a dinner for our French guests in the golf club on the Saturday evening. It was good to hear the commitment on both sides to continuing this worthwhile initiative despite the uncertainty caused by Brexit. I have no surgeries booked this month. Thanks to all. Now on to the General Election. Kilmacolm Guides celebrated their century and 100 years of Girl Guiding in the village. Well done to all concerned in this wonderful organisation. I am still receiving complaints about Virgin and their contractor and will keep you updated. Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow show went ahead in spite of the rain - a great day was still enjoyed by all. Contact me by email David.wilson@ Inverclyde.gov.uk or call 01475 712727. kilmacolm & quarriers Kilmacolm Community Clean-up On Saturday 22nd April sixteen stalwarts turned up for the Kilmacolm Community Clean-up organised by the Kilmacolm Community Council. It was a warm and sunny day and the group was kitted out and split into fi ve groups and sent out to various locations around Kilmacolm which included: The National Cycle track towards Port Glasgow; Balrossie; Netherwood Road; Knapps Loch car park; the B788 - Old Greenock Road and the Lochwinnoch Road and the town centre. After about two and a half hours the groups returned to the Pullman Car Park to deposit their hauls of roadside litter. The photograph shows some of the stalwarts with the litter that was gathered up on the day. We were all given a complimentary treat of millionaire’s shortcake donated by Greggs who are sponsoring the Clean Up Scotland Campaign. Kilmacolm Community Council thank Inverclyde Council and Keep Scotland Beautiful for their support and all of those who turned out on the day and look forward to future community clean ups. We now have two sections: Angel Voices (5 to 7years) and Voices+ (aged 8years upwards). The Choir’s Music Director is Helen Knight Bmus (Hons) and Archie Morris, second year student at the Royal Conservatoire is the accompanist. Recently the Choir enjoyed singing at the Old Kirk Festival of Music. On Friday 9th June at 7.30pm there will be the end of term Concert - Tickets £5 with refreshments. Sunday 21st May saw the Centenary Celebrations for our local Guides. 1st Kilmacolm Guides was established in June 1917 at St Columba’s School and has been an integral part of the community ever since. To mark this special occasion we were delighted to be joined by former Guides and Guide leaders together with our current and future Guides. Watched by not only the County Commissioner, the District Commissioner, the Division Commissioner but also the Deputy Chief Commissioner of Scotland, the Guides showcased their history through speech, poem and song. Turning the clock back to 1917 describing what it was like to be a Guide in Kilmacolm during the war, and then stepping through time with life as a 1980s Kilmacolm Guide up to present day 2017 and what Kilmacolm Guides is like today. It was a wonderful event with over 80 in attendance with lots of chatter, reminiscing and tales of Guiding e x p e r i e n c e s ! ! Here’s to the next 100 years! We are delighted that we have the support of our community through the Co op Community Fund. Our current Guides, together with Rainbows and Brownies showcased their history t h r o u g h speech, poem and song Flag Bearers representing B r o w n i e s , Guides and our Senior Section kilmacolm & quarriers Save The Children On Saturday April 29th, during Save the Children Week, a bucket collection was held in Kilmacolm village centre. Thanks to the generosity of so many people, a grand total of £244.05 was collected and has been remitted to the Charity to assist them in their valuable work abroad and in the UK. May I take this opportunity also to thank people for their generosity in donating regularly through the collecting cans located in some of the shops in Kilmacolm. This money does make a real difference to disadvantaged children’s lives.
