Jake Fulton, the founder and organiser of the Houston Litter Crew, has worked for many years to help remove rubbish from his local area. As a result of his efforts, he has motivated a diverse group of local residents to regularly volunteer to tackle litter left on the streets, verges and public places in Houston. As a result of Jake’s efforts, his crew have now collected over 1,000 bags of litter alongside larger items from the River Gryffe - including old baths, ironing boards and prams! Jake commented: “Prior to the formation of the Houston Litter Crew I would occasionally go to my hometown, Maybole, to help the litter picking team keep their streets clean. However, when a violent storm hit Houston a year ago I approached the Community Council for permission to use their Facebook page to advertise an idea I had to organise a clear up. The response was very positive and, on 19th March 2016, the Houston Litter Crew was born. “To date, 1,070 bags of litter have been collected from the streets of Houston and many new friendships formed between Litter Crew members. Who’d have thought that litter picking could be such a sociable event? “I’m very grateful to Keep Scotland Beautiful for this award and I’m delighted that all volunteers that form the Houston Litter Crew are getting the recognition that they so richly deserve. They help keep the beautiful village of Houston beautiful.” Nicola Turner, Community Projects Offi cer said on presenting the award: “I would like to congratulate Jake for his commitment to keeping Houston clear of litter. The magnifi cent sum of £268 was raised for the Charity. They are sure to “fl y” off so “bee” quick. houston, crosslee & brookfield Houston and Killellan Kirk Carnival 2017 Unfortunately the sun didn’t make an appearance but the stars and celebrities shone. The parade was led by our own 1st Houston Boys and Girls Brigade Pipe Band, the Queen and her attendants arrived safely at the West Halls ready to be crowned. The queen Amy Anthony was crowned by last years queen Megan Finn as were her attendants Keira McGarvey and Katie Allison all girls looking resplendent in their dresses and tiaras. The winners of the colouring competition and the fancy dress were announced and the prizes presented to the recipients. All stall holders had a busy afternoon despite the weather and a steady fl ow of customers helped swell the coffers. The amazing amount of £9,000 was raised and a sincere thanks to all involved. This is a great family day and a effort to be there would be appreciated. There will be a variety of stalls, bouncy castle and much more. Come along and watch all the animals being shown, the ponies jumping and not forgetting Houston's Got Talent - performances not to be missed. This year we are having a tug of war competition, so come along and support your team and support the Beat the Goalie competition, have a go on the bouncy castle or the gladiator. Have a wander round the show look at the different stalls, horse jumping and judging of the cows, sheep, horses and dogs. Not forgetting the Industrial tent where the crafts, baking and provisions will be shown. Whilst we all want faster broadband, and it is impossible to make an omelette without breaking eggs, we should at least ensure the egg stays in the pan and that Virgin Media are forced to return the infrastructure to the state in which they found it. Virgin Media have told me they are having a public meeting in our area to promote the work they are doing to produce a better broadband service. Over the last month I was delighted to attend the Gryffe High School award ceremony and see the excellent work carried out by both staff and pupils with the presentation of awards to all age groups. Gryffe really is one of the educational jewels in the crown of Renfrewshire, and I am very proud that it is in my ward. My advice surgery in Brookfi eld is on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6.30pm in Brookfi eld Village Hall, and my advice surgery in Houston is on the 4th Thursday of the month in Houston Village Hall, at 7.15pm, excluding July and Christmas. SWI Success A team of three ladies representing Brookfi eld took park in the fi nals of the SWI Indoor Bowling event held in Falkirk on Monday 24th April. Twenty teams participated and it was a closely fought contest but the Brookfi eld SWI team comprising Helen Dobson, Gina Rae and Nancy Mullen were the overall winners. Well done ladies! New Classes We are delighted to welcome CoStep.Co to Brookfi eld who will be running classes in Argentine Tango, Ballroom and Latin for dancers of all levels from September 2017. CoStep.Co also specialise in preparing couples for their Wedding First Dance. In addition to group classes, they will also be offering a range of private tuition options from July 2017, from a single session covering basics steps to a series of lessons to give a more polished performance. An incredible achievement and one that the residents of Houston should be rightly proud of. 1.2 million food parcels were distributed by The Trussell Trust Food Banks (of which Renfrewshire Food Bank is a member) in 2016 and one third of these food parcels were distributed to children. If you would like to make a food or toiletry donation to Renfrewshire Food Bank then you can fi nd the Houston Co-op donation bin at the front of the store to the right of the tills. A list of ‘urgently needed’ food and toiletry items can be found at the donation bin. Wonderful to know that our welcoming wee village is helping those less fortunate in the Renfrewshire area...
