Five junior squash players from Strathgryffe were selected to represent the West of Scotland in the annual Scottish Inter Regional competition held in Edinburgh at the end of April. Ruadhri McDougall, John Meehan, & Calum Carswell who are all eligible to play for the U17 age group were promoted to the Under 19 team which finished 2nd overall despite winning all their matches. The fifth member of the Strathgryffe squad, Beth Moglia played her part in helping the U15’s finish just 2 points behind the group winners. Ruadhri’s young brother Findlay was part of the U13 team which fi nished 3rd in their division just a handful of points behind the winners. For more information, visit www.p1superstock.co.uk Gleddoch Ladies Golf Club GOOD GOLFING WEATHER - at last! April has been a pretty good month weather wise, and the course is improving by the day. The April medal was won by Roisin Black(Div 1) with an excellent score of 77, and Mhairi Bryce won Division 2. Other Competitions: 9th April: 5 club Stableford won by Roisin Black 22nd April: Stableford Division 1 Roisin Black, Division 2 Sheena Wallace with a fantastic score of 40! 29th April: 1st Round Championship: Division 1 Shirley Back, great score 79. Division 2 Mhairi Bryce. Three teams from Gleddoch took part in The Ladies’ Open Tri am at Erskine Golf club, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day. The course was in great condition, and the weather was kind. The team of Isabell Donnelly, June Lockhart and Elaine Thom won third prize. The pairing of Roisin Black and Margaret Adams won their first round match at Skelmorlie in the Daily Mail foursomes, then unfortunately lost a very close second round match to Kilmacolm. The fi rst West Renfrewshire league match was a comprehensive win for Paisley but it was a beautiful evening (if a bit chilly towards the end) and the Paisley ladies’ hospitality was very much appreciated. Sporting Blog by Lesley Handley Weight Training Whilst training one of my clients the other day, a friend of his approached us and laughed saying he could never do what my client was doing as he was too old for it... My client was 63 and was lifting a 30kg bar doing a chest press on a bench... Weight training in the gym has a lot of misguided beliefs surrounding it; women think it will make them bulky and elderly people think it will injure them. The issue is, these populations that think weight training is bad could be seeing massive benefi ts if implementing it in their training. The fact is, building muscle is hard work, and it doesn’t come easy to a huge amount of people. Many men struggle for years to build solid muscular tissue and this struggle is compounded more so in females; as females’ have 10x less testosterone than men, (a key muscle building hormone). You also need a calorie surplus when looking to gain muscle, so you need Well done to Strathgryffe brother and sister Megan and Liam O’Brien. Seven year old Megan competed in her first Grade 3 tennis tournament at Waverley, Edinburgh in April and never lost a game taking home the Girls 8 & U trophy. Ten year old Liam moved into the 12 & U category in April. The same month he won the Boys 12 & U title at Whitecraigs, Glasgow followed by the Boys 12U Rogy tour at Mortonhall TC in Edinburgh. Liam has also been invited to attend a boys GB inter region training camp in Loughborough taking in sixteen of the best players in the UK in that age category. Whether you walk, run or jog, you will all get that finish line feeling and be able to celebrate in style in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. “The new route was awesome”, “The atmosphere was electric” & “Amazing entertainment on course” to eat more than your body normally needs to stimulate new muscle growth. It is rare for a female to increase calories if they are health conscious and trying to improve their body composition. Muscle creates shape and many women want more shape, fi rm legs, toned arms, and to create the ideal body. Weight training is actually an essential path to creating that ‘look’. Weights, often heavy weights, need to be lifted to condition the muscles under fat tissue, and then reduce the fat tissue enough to see it. The elderly are another population put off by the apparent negatives of weight training. Often there’s a perception of a high injury risk with weight training in a gym, or perceived as being for the ‘young’. Strength in old age becomes important as the body naturally declines in overall function/ condition, joint integrity, bone strength and muscle flexibility. Lifting weights just once a week can protect against these issues. Strong bones, muscles and joints will dramatically reduce the risk of injury and comes from being active and resisting your body against heavy objects, such as weight training or other activities.
