54 the advertizer t: 01505 613340 07731 923970 e: info@advertizer.co.uk Local Schoolgirl supports charity with the help of UWS A recent charity initiative by local teenager Mirin Thomson (15) has resulted in bags of support for a needy charity. Mirin is undertaking the volunteering section of her Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) through her Girls Brigade Company, 1st Houston, which was supporting Mary’s Meals Backpack Project. The Project sends fi lled backpacks to children who do not have basic education or hygiene. The backpacks help to enable children to attend school, gain an education to help them escape from poverty as they grow up. Mirin, an S3 pupil at Gryffe High School looked at different ways to ask for donations. Mirin asked her mum Jacqueline, who works at University of the West of Scotland (UWS) as Insurance and Risk Officer if any of her colleagues might help. UWS colleagues supported Mirin’s efforts by donating an overwhelming range of items. Professor Craig Mahoney, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of UWS said: “The way in which colleagues from across the University have come together to support Mirin’s charity drive has been tremendous and refl ects the University’s ethos of supporting staff, students and members of the community. The work Mirin is doing is great and we all wish her well in the DofE Award programme.” Next, Mirin set up a Just Giving page for direct donations to Mary’s Meals from UWS staff, friends and family were made, providing enough to feed 17 children for a whole school year Mirin and her fellow Brigader Sophie Spence, made an appeal at Houston & Killellen Kirk. They asked the congregation to support 1st Houston GB’s Coffee evening where in exchange for some donated items, they were rewarded with as much tea, coffee and home-baking as they could manage! Mirin, said: “I would like to thank UWS, my friends, family and congregation for their generosity – their support has been brilliant. Kilbarchan Community Nursery The children have been out and about this month and have visited two workshops in Paisley Museum. The first visit was a ‘Creepy Crawlies’ workshop where they learned about insects and used magnifying glasses to go on a bug hunt. On the second visit ‘Space explorer’s workshop’ Adventure Ted helped the children to learn about space and planets. As part of our ongoing transition programme for starting school in August, all children now have a ‘buddy’ from Kilbarchan Primary. The school children have visited the nursery as well as having playground sessions with the nursery children. The buddies will be there to lend a helping hand to settle the children into primary school in August. Summer term finishes with parties for all children on 27th June followed by our end of term presentation on 28th June for all pre-school children. We wish them well in their new schools. Kilmacolm Playgroup and Toddlers As we come to the end of our year at playgroup, we would like to take this opportunity to say farewell and good luck to all our little stars who are leaving us to begin the next stage of their journey at nursery. Our Senior playleader, Miss Gorman will also be leaving at the summer holidays to return to University in August. We are keen to encourage anyone looking to start at playgroup to get in touch! We would love for you to come and join us on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday morning between 9.15 and 11.40. We take from 2 years 4 months to 4 years. @GryffeAds www.advertizer.co.uk june 2017 Bridge of Weir Primary School 55 55 The last term of the school year is always one of the busiest and most exciting for our pupils, from fundraising, to inductions and goodbyes – the whole school has a great start to Summer ahead of them. Our children continue to help fundraise both for the school and for initiatives across the country. Annual fundraising for Red Nose Day brought in over £600 for the charity with donations from the whole school. Our Primary Four classes took part in a sports challenge to raise money for the British Heart Foundation, raising more than £230. Our dedicated parent council raised more than £300 from the Spring disco and also £1,500 from the book sale of which we have almost £1,000 to spend on new books. This is great news! All of these fantastic donations would not be possible without the generous support of our local families – thank you! Last month, Primary Four, Five and Six had a real treat when three very talented musicians from Feis Phaislig visited and performed. Playing a selection of traditional music on the accordion, harp and guitar and told the pupils all about the Feis workshops which are available in Paisley this summer. We were delighted to welcome to the school some of the children who will be starting Primary One in August 2017. They brought along their parents to try out our school lunches and met their Primary Six buddies and spent some time taking part in a range of activities in a Primary One classroom. It was hard to tell who had the most fun – our P6 pupils who did a brilliant job of welcoming the younger children or the nursery pupils who looked like they could easily have spent the day here! Once again our Primary Seven pupils had a wonderful residential week at Ardentinny Outdoor Centre in April. They all had the opportunity to take part in kayaking, abseiling, rock hopping and gorge walking. Team work, challenge and adventure are all part of the Ardentinny experience and after a week in the great outdoors everyone returned to school very tired but very happy. Looking ahead to our last month we have lots in the diary to keep us busy in one of our most packed terms in the school calendar. June will be full with preschool presentations for our nursery leavers, plus inductions for the Primary Ones. Sports Day on Friday 9 June is one of our most anticipated events, we hope for just a bit of sunshine and hopefully no rain! The summer term is also a very exciting time for our Primary Seven pupils with an emotional valedictory and fun end of term Dance to top off the last days at the school. Duchal Nursery It’s been fabulous to be able to enjoy our outdoor classroom with the wonderful weather we have been having lately. The children have been making the most of our garden area and we have been out and about in the park too. There has been lots of preparation for our annual Sports Day, hopefully it will dry for all our budding athletes! We had an amazing time at Fruin Farm near Helensburgh. There was all sorts of pond life to investigate, we planted seeds, fed and brushed the goats and even got to take the alpacas for a walk. Before we did all this we were very eco friendly and collected all the litter so the animals did not eat any plastic bottles or rubbish as we would not want them to choke. The children really enjoyed themselves and learnt so much. We have an action packed time at Duchal, learning through play in a friendly secure environment. Strawberry Field Out of School Care A busy few months with a number of activities from Chinese new year, a Burns supper to celebrating Easter. Over the Easter holidays we enjoyed several trips away to The Tall ship, Transport Museum, The Peoples Palace, Winter Gardens, cycling and various play parks. The recent good weather has enabled children to have lots of energetic outdoor play in our 5 acres of land, ranging from football, bouncy castle to making their own dens. Some babies go straight for the cake, others have a play with the colourful balloons. Baby is free to explore, taste and play with the cake at their leisure, once they’ve had enough we move onto a bubbly and warm ‘Tub Time’ where baby can splash around in a cute bath and clean up after all that messy fun! To round off a lovely photo session parents get to take away the remaining cake home to enjoy a slice with a nice cuppa. The Result? Super cute professional photographs to mark your baby’s very special first birthday. Parents truly treasure these photos as they symbolise how much their beautiful baby has grown in the last year.
