Water Treatment Works Completed
A major upgrade of a water treatment works, which will benefi t more than
84,000 people in parts of Renfrewshire, has been completed.
Scottish Water has invested £16m in improvements at the Muirdykes Water
Treatment Works (WTW), which provides water for homes and businesses in
Renfrewshire, including Johnstone, Howwood, Linwood, Elderslie, Kilbarchan,
Quarrelton, Craigend and parts of the south of Paisley such as Glenburn and
Foxbar.
The upgrade, which involved the installation of a new fi ltration building and
process at the WTW near Howwood, will reduce the risk in the network of
discoloured water caused by naturally-occurring manganese.
Although it is possible that localised discoloured water might occur following
issues such as a burst water main, the risk of widespread discolouration
throughout the network caused by manganese at Barcraigs reservoir near
Howwood in the summer months has been substantially reduced following
the WTW upgrade.
The completion of the project follows investment of £4m four years ago
on more than 100 miles of water mains affected by discoloured water in
Renfrewshire and the installation of a cutting edge piece of equipment called
a Wears Resmix system at Barcraigs reservoir in 2012.
The upgrade of the WTW, which was carried out for Scottish Water by
contractors Black & Veatch, started in September 2015. The new secondary
stage fi ltration process will remove oxydised manganese from the system
before it goes into the supply zone and will be housed in a single-storey
building constructed on the site of the WTW.
Scottish Water had given an undertaking to the Drinking Water Quality
Regulator to provide an effective manganese removal system for this area. The
work was contained on Scottish Water’s site at the WTW and did not cause
any disruption to normal services to customers or any road traffi c issues, other
than some additional site traffi c using temporary access that was required.
Some trees on the WTW site, which had to be removed to enable the work to
be carried out, will be replaced following the project.
kilbarchan - howwood - lochwinnoch - elderslie
Thank you to everyone in Kilbarchan Howwood and
Lochwinnoch who voted at the recent council elections and
who have allowed me the honour and privilege to serve them
for the next 5 years. I will continue to represent everybody and
will work hard all year round
I also want to congratulate Bill Binks, Andy Doig and Emma
Rodden fellow ward 9 councillors on their success at the
election. I regret that my colleague and friend Chris Gilmour
will not be joining us as ward councillors.
I want to place on record my thanks to Chris, not only for his
support of me personally, but also for his tireless work over the
last 5 years as chair of the Clyde Muirsheil Joint Committee, the Johnstone and
Villages Local Area Committee, and his support of Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch
Community Councils other village organisations.
There will be many challenges over the next 5 years. At the moment the biggest
is the threat to the green belt. The decision of Renfrewshire Council to reject
the proposed development at Johnshill will therefore be welcomed. The 1,360
objections from villagers spoke for themselves, and it is only right that these views
should have been listened to and acted upon. This was simply a case of the
wrong development in the wrong place.
The appeal in respect of the Branscroft development in Kilbarchan is still pending.
The Scottish Government are well aware of local feelings and the overwhelming
opposition to this proposal. An appeal has also now been lodged in regard to the
development in Milliken Road Kilbarchan which was rejected by Renfrewshire
Council in March. Renfrewshire Council has also received notifi cation of a
possible future planning application on land at South of the Holms.
Old Howwood Road, Howwood - I will continue to keep a close eye on each of
these planning issues and update villagers accordingly.
Due to the changes in the ward boundaries I am having to change the details
of my surgeries. I will continue to hold surgeries on the fi rst Saturday of each
month except January and July at the following times: 9am in the McKillop
Institute Lochwinnoch, 10am in Howwood Village Hall, 11am in the Steeple Hall
Kilbarchan, all with effect from Saturday 3rd June. Meantime please contact me
at cllr.derek.bibby@renfrewshire.gov.uk or phone 07534 156007.
kilbarchan - howwood - lochwinnoch - elderslie
This is my fi rst message to you as your new Councillor on
Renfrewshire Council. I will start by thanking you all for voting
for me and giving me the opportunity to represent you on the
Council. Over the next fi ve years I will work hard to progress
the things that matter most to you and ensure that all of
Ward 9 has a voice. Complaints have been lodged with me
already about proposed housing developments at Branscroft,
Kilbarchan and land south of the Holms, Old Howwood Road,
Howwood, that also covers part of Ward 8 as well. Condition
of roads within our ward, speeding in our high streets, litter
and and anti-social behaviour are also the main concerns. My
core aim will be to insist that the residents of Johnstone North,
Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch are given more say in
the decisions that affect each area.
I am currently going through the motions of settling in and acclimatising myself to
this new environment. The fi rst Council meeting takes place on the 18th May and
the various positions of responsibility will be agreed and appointments made.
From then on the work begins. The times of surgeries etc. have not been fi nalised
as yet but I hope to have details for you in the next edition of the Advertizer. In the
mean time my contact details are as follows.
