BAE Systems – Boat building
competition (by Emily Anderson S2)
Two ambassadors from BAE systems came to our school to help us build a
boat from different materials such as cardboard
and paper. We also used waterproof materials so
the boat would not sink. At the end of the course,
we went to Strathclyde University to put our boat
through five challenges which were weight, speed,
cargo, sea keeping and survivability. The next day
we went to Scotstoun for a tour of BAE system
shipyard. Our boat went on display with boats from
other schools to see who had won the competition.
Unfortunately, our boat did not win but it was still a
great experience.
Girls in Engineering (by Megan Craig S1)
The girls engineering event was a fun and interesting day which tested our ability
in many different aspects. Our first task in the event was to build a boat. Once
our bout was built and fully waterproof and the motor was taped in, we put it in the
water to see if it would fl oat. The second task was to build a crane. Afterwards,
we got the chance to ask questions to all the engineers. Then it was time to put
our fi nished products to the test. We had to make our crane pick up some eggs
in a plastic bag then lower it in to the boat. The boat then had to make it to the
other side in the time limit. We did not win the event but overall it was a great
experience and would do it again.
Leavers’ Day
Senior pupils took part in an action packed day on their last day. After meeting
their guidance teachers and mentors, S6 pupils joined their parents for the leavers’
ceremony where they were presented with certificates and the all-important leavers’
hoodies. This was followed by staff versus pupil football, karaoke, dodgeball and
primary school day games. Pupils and staff then enjoyed a Leavers’ Lunch and
the day was completed with an informal pupil-led assembly looking back at six
years of PGHS. A great way to end a great school experience!
Abbey Nursery
By the time you read this we will have had our annual Marvel and
Disney themed Family BBQ at the nursery and the children will have
taken part in lots of activities as well as competing in the Sports
Day Races and taking away a Commemorative Medal. Thank you
to everyone who come along and enjoyed the fun and games and
mouthwatering Hog Roast.
Recently our Grasshoppers
have been out and about in the
community visiting Mosswood
Care Home, Linwood to meet the
residents as well as entertaining
them with songs from the nursery.
The children were then invited back
to participate in their Easter Egg
hunt and some nice conversations
took place between the generations! The children also used this
opportunity to visit the local Tesco to pick their favourite piece of fruit
from the Healthier Kids, Happy Shopping Scheme.
Following a spring theme, the Busy Bunnies playroom are currently
exploring Mini beasts and the “I would like to learn” cards completed
by children and parents, have given staff lots of ideas for experiences.
We have been going outside on Bug Hunts, reading stories and
using our magnifying glasses to look for worms, spiders and ants.
Orla brought us in some tadpoles which we will watch grow and
develop into frogs and a big thank you also to John Jackson and
Eilidh Donn for bringing in some worms to
help us complete our wormery and also to
Sam for bringing in a caterpillar for everyone
to see.
Trips are always a fun activity at the nursery
and whilst the Grasshoppers are off soon to
Blair Drummond, the under 3’s have already
had a great day out at Lamont Farm in
Erskine where they
could see, touch
and learn more
about a whole variety of farm and exotic
animals.
Continuing the outdoor theme across the
nursery, the Little Ladybirds have enjoyed
planting and learning about how we help
little seeds to grow into big beautiful fl owers.!
The children loved the opportunity to get all
messy and are continuing to enjoy helping to water and take care of
their seeds before they take them home to nurture as sunfl owers.
Meanwhile the nursery continues to be busy with a very successful
parents night recently and lots of lovely comments after reading the
detailed Reports. There have also been visits from the local primary
school teachers to meet their ‘new pupils’ and return visits by the
children and then getting ready for their Graduation Presentation
and then we move onto planning for our Summer Programme!!
Finally, a number of our staff took part in the Race for Life 10k at
Glasgow Green recently and we would like to congratulate them on
completing the course and raising funds for charity.
