personalities, but this was quite natural, and this<br />
is something which is not peculiar to Muslim<br />
historians. The British, American and other<br />
Western historians <strong>of</strong> the modern period have<br />
done the same thing. We do not know <strong>of</strong> any Western<br />
historians except a few German and French<br />
historians and one or two British historians<br />
who<br />
have paid attention to personalities other than<br />
those who belong to their own nation.<br />
Nevertheless, it is a solid fact that the writings<br />
<strong>of</strong> Arab historians are <strong>of</strong> a very high standard<br />
and they may be considered as authorities in<br />
their own field because the facts recorded in<br />
fulfil ail the requirements <strong>of</strong> authenticity.<br />

Perhaps the British and American historians<br />
do not know that in writing history our historians<br />
exercised the same caution as they did in collecting<br />
the Traditions <strong>of</strong> the Holy Prophet. They<br />
scrutinised the contents <strong>of</strong> the material they incorporated<br />
and they themselves identified along<br />
with others the narrators through whom this material<br />
reached them. Thus they brought historiography<br />
closer to the science <strong>of</strong> Traditions.<br />
It is<br />
true that those who scrutinised Hadlth Traditions<br />
(<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Prophet) were more careful, because the<br />
subject <strong>of</strong> Hadlth was the person ; <strong>of</strong> the Holy<br />
