<strong>The</strong> king: "Is it really true what you predict?"<br />

Shiqq: "Yes, <strong>by</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heavens and <strong>the</strong> earth and <strong>of</strong> all high and low<br />

between <strong>the</strong>m both, what I have informed you is all true and doubt-free."<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ish~q stated that <strong>the</strong> soothsayers' prediction had great impact on Rabi'a b.<br />

Nqr and so he provisioned all his family and relatives for departure to Iraq. He<br />

wrote for <strong>the</strong>m to a Persian king called Sabiir b. Khurzadh who settled <strong>the</strong>m in<br />

d-Hira. According to <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq, <strong>the</strong> progeny <strong>of</strong> Rabi'a b. Na~r included<br />

d-Nu'mzn b. al-Mundhir, son <strong>of</strong> al-Nuka b. al-Mundhii b. 'Amr b. 'Adi b.<br />

Rabi'a b. Nasr. This al-Nu'miin was viceroy over al-Hira for <strong>the</strong> Persian kings;<br />

and <strong>the</strong> Arabs used to send delegations to him and gave him praise. This, <strong>the</strong>n,<br />

is what <strong>Muhammad</strong> b. Ishaq said about al-Nu'ma b. al-Mundhir being <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

line <strong>of</strong> Rabi'a b. Na~r, according to most people. <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq related that when <strong>the</strong><br />

sword <strong>of</strong> al-Nucm%n b. al-Mundhir was brought to <strong>the</strong> Commander <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Faithful, 'Umar b. al-Khatpb, he asked Jubayr b. Mu~m from whom it had<br />

come. He replied, "From <strong>the</strong> remains <strong>of</strong> Qan~ b. Ma'ad b. ‘Adrian." <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishq<br />

commented that it was unclear who that person was.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Story <strong>of</strong> Tnbbac Abii Karib Tubb~in As'ad, king <strong>of</strong> Yemen, with <strong>the</strong><br />

people <strong>of</strong> Medina; how he wished to raid <strong>the</strong> Holy Sanctuary at Mecca.<br />

<strong>The</strong>n he dignified and venerated it and covered it with cloth; thus he<br />

was <strong>the</strong> first to do so.<br />

<strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq stated that when Rabi'a b. Nqr died all kingship in Yemen reverted to<br />

Hassan b. Tubban As'ad Abii Karib. Tubbzn As'ad was <strong>the</strong> last tubba'; he was<br />

<strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> Kulki Karib b. Zayd. Zayd, <strong>the</strong> first tubba: was <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> 'Amr Dhii<br />

d-Adh'zr b. Abraha Dhn al-Manar b. al-b'ish h. 'Adi b. Sayfi b. Saha'<br />

al-Asghar b. Ka'b Kahf al-Zulum b. Zayd h. Sahl b. 'Amr b. Qays b. Muswiya<br />

b. Jusham b. 'Abd Shams b. Walil h. d-Ghawth b. Qatan b. 'Arib b. Zuhayr b.<br />

Ayman b. al-Hamaysac b. alLcAranjaj. <strong>The</strong> latter was Himyar b. Sabal al-Akbar<br />

b. Ya'rub b. Yashjub b. Q&@n. 'Abd d-Mali b. Hishm gave Sahal's line as<br />

being son <strong>of</strong> Yashjub h. Yacrub b. Qah-.<br />

According to <strong>Ibn</strong> Ishaq, Tubbzn As'ad Abii Karib was he who went to<br />

Medina and led two Jewish rabbis to Yemen and refurbished and covered with<br />

cloth <strong>the</strong> holy sanctuary. His reign preceded that <strong>of</strong> Rabi'a b. Navr. He had<br />

routed his return journey from a campaign in <strong>the</strong> east through Medina. First he<br />

had passed <strong>the</strong>re without bo<strong>the</strong>ring its inhabitants and left among <strong>the</strong>m a son <strong>of</strong><br />

his who was treacherously killed. He advanced against it, determined to destroy<br />

it, wipe out its people, and cut down its date-palms. So this clan <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> an&<br />
