Worldwide smartphone sales grew over 9% in 2017 Q1
Mumbai, May 23 (IANS)
Chinese smartphone manufacturers
performed well as 380 million
mobile units were sold globally in
the first quarter of 2017 -- a 9.1 per
cent increase over the first quarter
of 2016, market research firm
Gartner said on Tuesday. The firm
also said the shift in buyer preference
is positively affecting Chinese
manufacturers such as Huawei,
Oppo and Vivo in their strategy to
build desirable features at affordable
prices. "The top three Chinese
smartphone manufacturers are
driving sales with their competitively
priced, high quality smartphones
equipped with innovative
features," Anshul Gupta, Research
Director at Gartner, said in a statement.
Their combined market
share in the first quarter of 2017
accounted for 24 per cent, up seven
percentage points year-on-year.
"Furthermore, aggressive marketing
and sales promotion have further
helped these brands to take
share from other brands in markets
such as India, Indonesia and
Thailand," Gupta added.
Samsung's smartphone sales
declined 3.1 per cent in the first
quarter of 2017. "Although
Samsung announ ced that preorders
for the Galaxy S8 and S8+
are up 30 per cent year-over-year,
the absence of an alternative to
Note 7 and the fierce competition
in the basic smartphone segment
are leading Samsung to continuously
lose market share," Gupta
said. "Sales of iPhones were flat,
which led to a drop in market share
year over year. Similar to Samsung,
Apple is increasingly facing fierce
competition from Chinese brands
Oppo and Vivo, among others, and
its performance in China is under
attack," he noted.
Manchester Arena (capacity:
21,000) by popular US singer
Ariana Grande. Political parties
suspended campaigning for the
June 8 election and investigators
hunted for accomplices of
the bomber, identified as 22-
year-old Salman Abedi. BBC
said the individual was “British
or UK born”. One 23-year-old
man was arrested in Chorlton,
south Manchester, in connection
with the incident. Hours
later, police set off a controlled
explosion and raided a house in
Elsmore Road, about 6 km from
the arena. The country was
struggling to come to terms
with the tragedy claimed by the
so-called Islamic State, as
Britain remained at the threat
level of ‘severe’, which officially
means a terror attack is
‘highly likely’. In London,
Scotland Yard stepped up its
presence in public places and
reviewed its plans for several
public events planned over the
summer.
A spokesman of the Indian
high commission told
Hindustan Times there was no
information of any Indian casualty,
but added a list of nationalities
of the victims was awaited
from police. A response unit has
been set up by the mission.
India’s President Pranab
Mukherjee, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi and Congress
president Sonia Gandhi condemned
the attack. Queen
Elizabeth said: “The whole
nation has been shocked by the
death and injury in Manchester
last night of so many people,
adults and children, who had
just been enjoying a concert”.
The Greater Manchester Police
(GMP) said the blast with a
‘home-made device’ was carried
out by one individual. It
China to block India's
NSG bid again
Beijing : China on Monday said it has not changed its position
on India's membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), indicating
it will again block New Delhi's plea at the plenary session in
Bern next month. "China's position on the non-NPT members' participation
in the NSG has not changed," Chinese Foreign Ministry
spokesperson Hua Chunying said on Monday. ss"We support the
NSG group following the mandate of the 2016 plenary session and
following building consensus as well as the intergovernmental
process that is open and transparent to deal with the relevant issues
in a two-step approach," she added. At the NSG's plenary session in
Seoul in June 2016, China opposed India's application. It again scuttled
India's bid in the November consultative group meeting. The
plenary meet of the 48-member elite grouping, which regulates
global nuclear trade, is likely to take place at Bern in Switzerland in
June. India has been backed by the US and other members in the
group, but China opposes its entry, citing its non-signatory status to
the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Beijing argues that if India
can be let in why not Pakistan, which is also not an NPT member.
India finds the NPT discriminatory in nature. The US, Switzerland,
Mexico, Italy, Russia and Britain have backed New Delhi's NSG
bid. The issue of the Dalai Lama visiting Arunachal Pradesh has
added to the cold vibes between the two.
was the first terror attack on this
scale since the July, 2005, serial
blasts across London’s transport
network, killing more than 50
people. Prime Minister Theresa
May chaired an emergency
meeting -called Cobra -- in
Downing Street and later
addressed the nation, announcing
that many of the injured had
“life-threatening injuries”.
Pakistan to unveil
new budgets
Islamabad : The Pakistan government
is set to unveil the nation's
latest budget on May 24 and 26, the
media reported on Sunday. Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday
formally sent advice to President
Mamnoon Hussain to summon the
National Assembly and Senate sessions
for the presentation of the federal
budget 2017-18, Dawn online
reported. According to official
sources, Sharif has also sent a summary
to the President requesting him
to summon a joint session of both
houses of Parliament on June 1 for
the mandatory annual presidential
address.
