靜 靜 地 和 獅 群 一 起 休 息 了 片 刻 , 我 們 有 些 依
依 不 捨 地 離 開 了 那 裏 , 看 來 這 些 猛 獸 們 也 早 已 習 慣
了 被 欣 賞 的 目 光 , 直 到 我 們 離 開 也 沒 有 任 何 挪 動 的
意 思 。 除 了 陸 地 上 的 動 物 , 我 們 一 路 見 過 的 鳥 的 種
類 恐 怕 也 比 過 往 所 有 時 間 加 起 來 的 都 多 。 鷺 鴇 、 鵜
鵠 、 鸚 鵡 、 翠 鳥 、 犀 鳥 …… 不 過 , 讓 我 印 象 最 深 刻
的 , 還 是 一 種 紫 胸 長 尾 雀 。 紫 色 、 湖 藍 、 翠 綠 色 、
亮 橙 色 的 羽 毛 在 灰 褐 色 為 主 色 調 的 非 洲 格 外 惹 眼 ,
讓 人 覺 得 有 些 美 麗 的 不 真 實 。
一 路 走 來 , 我 的 腦 海 裏 不 禁 浮 現 出 迪 士 尼 經

慶 典 上 , 那 各 種 各 樣 的 動 物 們 如 萬 花 筒 般 旋 轉 、 變
幻 著 演 繹 出 一 幅 幅 奇 幻 瑰 麗 的 畫 面 。 當 時 看 到 那 一
場 景 時 , 我 們 可 能 更 多 是 在 感 歎 藝 術 家 們 豐 富 的 想
像 力 和 傑 出 的 塑 造 表 現 手 法 。 而 如 今 , 當 我 們 親 身
來 到 這 裏 , 才 發 現 原 來 電 影 竟 是 真 實 的 寫 照 , 是 對
大 自 然 生 生 不 息 、 蓬 勃 朝 氣 的 由 衷 讚 頌 。

other African animal imaginable. Indeed, Chobe
has one of the greatest year-round concentrations
of wildlife in all of Africa. The only one of the
“Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and
rhino) hard to spot is the rare rhinoceros.
Setting off on a full-day’s game drive in an open
Land Rover, we bounce along red-sand tracks
criss-crossing the scrubby bush by the river. Large
Chacma baboons swinging through the trees catch
our attention. Then a dazzle of zebras. (Don’t you
love the name for a group of zebras? Their black
and white stripes are certainly dazzling!) We pass
a bull elephant giving himself a dust bath with his
trunk, his ears flapping. When two male giraffes
circle each other in what looks like a curious dance,
we stop to watch; after each circle, they curl their
sinewy necks down and bump the other’s body
with their heads — playfighting, we’re told.
We can’t wait to see lions. And we do! We
drive up close, observing four lions resting in the
shade, and we’re amazed yet again at how close
the animals allow us to get. (Most safari viewing
in Africa occurs on game drives, and the animals
are habituated to the sight and sound of people
sitting in open vehicles.)
And, oh, the birds! African fish eagle, ground
hornbills, sacred ibis? Check. The most beautiful
is the lilac-breasted roller — in flight, the tips of
its turquoise wing feathers look like they’ve been
dipped in royal blue ink.
So many animals and birds rotate through this
kaleidoscope of nature that our necks get sore
swivelling from right to left. It’s a marvel they
can live together in harmony.
With their tusked snouts, comical warthogs
dig up mud that baboons then pick through with
their nimble fingers, plucking out juicy bulbs to
eat. Antelope even prance around near the lions!
At night, yes, the cats hunt. But in the light of
day, it’s all one peaceful scene.
Still, it’s the elephants we gaze at later in the
day in the river that give us the most joy. Globally,
their numbers are declining. But here in “The
Land of the Giants,” they are safe for future
generations to witness. And that is a blessing.
