SUPPORT SERVICES FOR
CLIMATE CHANGE MITIGATION
AND ADAPTATION
School of Engineering of the Universidad Nacional de Colombia
The School of Engineering of the
Universidad Nacional de Colombia has
been working for more than 10 years
in the climate change arena, planning
and executing teaching, research
and consulting activities, conducted
by well-qualified faculty members
of five departments: Chemical and
Environmental Engineering, Civil and
Agricultural Engineering, Electrical and
Electronic Engineering, Mechanical and
Mechatronic Engineering and Industrial
and Systems Engineering. In this way, the
School can offer services related to the
climate change area, especially focused
on the following specific subjects:
Greenhouse gas (GHG) inventories
in energy, industrial processes, solid
waste, waste water treatment plants,
agriculture, enteric fermentation and
transport.
Developments of factors of emission
in the field of transport, engines,
industrial processes, generation and
managing of solid waste and waste
water treatment, enteric fermentation
and other agricultural practices.
Mitigation of GHG emissions in
such areas as efficient uses of energy,
lighting, biofuels, utilisation of organic
matter, adjustment of industrial
processes, management technologies
for sanitary landfills and waste water
treatment plants, application of
renewable energies such as wind, solar,
tides and geothermal.
Topics related to adaptability to
climate change, in relation to civil
construction, analysis of vulnerability
and risk of the threat of sea level rise
in coastal cities; effects of temperature
increases on agricultural production;
loss of biodiversity in fragile
ecosystems such as wetlands and high
plateau areas.
Joint projects can be established by the
research groups in epidemiology of
the school of medicine, regarding the
impact of climate change on vectorborne
diseases such as dengue and
malaria.
The School of Engineering has seven
doctoral, fourteen master’s and nine
undergraduate programmes in which
the focus is on training and research in
climate change topics such as:
Theoretical bases and local and
global models of temperature, rainfall,
radiation and other effects
technology for GHG and air quality
Hydrology and soil effects of climate
change
Industrially sustainable processes in
relation to GHG generation
Efficient use of energy, utilisation of
biomass and application of renewable
sources of energy.
In recent years, advisory and consulting
projects have been undertaken
for such clients as the Colombian
Ministry of Environment, Housing
and Territorial Development; the
Secretariat of Environment of Bogotá;
the Administrative and Special Unit of
Solid Waste (UAESP); the Government
and Autonomous Regional Corporation
of Cundinamarca; as well as international
entities such as the United Nations and
the World Bank.
