In 2013, BMW brought their vision of urban emissions-free electromobility to the streets:
The BMW i3 is purpose built for electric driving.
– hydroelectric energy. The BMW i3 also
represents the exemplary use of ultralight
carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP).
Carbon fibre makes the BMW i3 up to
350 kilograms lighter than a conventional
electric car. The BMW Group plant in
Leipzig, Germany, uses wind turbines
to supply the entire energy required for
BMW i production. With our holistic
approach to premium electro-mobility,
we aim to set new global standards and
permanently change mobility patterns
in metropolitan areas through integrated
mobility solutions. Alongside the
‘e-revolution’ currently being driven
worldwide by the BMW i3 and the BMW
i8 plug-in hybrid sports car, the BMW
Group also leads the way in the evolution
of conventional vehicle concepts. This
includes further refinement of highlyefficient
combustion engines, lightweight
construction, hybrid systems and, once
again, resource-efficient production. We
continue to set ourselves ambitious targets:
we aim to lower the CO 2
emissions of
our European new vehicle fleet by at least
50 per cent from 1995 levels by 2020. In
production, our goal is to reduce resource
consumption per vehicle by 45 per cent
from 2006 levels by 2020. Our vision is
ultimately to achieve completely CO 2
-free
vehicle production.
"The BMW Group’s
understanding of sustainability
goes beyond the car."
At the same time, the global economy
and our own company processes are
becoming increasingly complex. We
must, therefore, continue to develop the
relationship between risk management,
strategy and dialogue with external
partners within society. This is another
reason for us to support the Climate
Action Programme’s Sustainable
Innovation Forum.
LEADING TECHNOLOGICAL
CHANGE
Our corporate philosophy of sustainability
is affirmed by the public and, above
all, our stakeholders worldwide – with
their rising expectations of automobile
manufacturers in terms of efficiency
and dynamic performance, as well as
future developments in environmental
compatibility and alternative mobility
concepts for the cities of the future. For
this reason, the BMW Group aims to
lead technological change and a new way
of corporate thinking. It is not sufficient
for a company geared towards value
creation, like the BMW Group, to pursue
environmental and social commitment as
an end in itself. Our success is based not
only on financial fundamentals, but also
on the solid anchoring of the company
in society. This makes sustainability an
inherent part of our business model and
the necessary foundation for our success
as a global player. In essence, sustainability
is the basis for a sustainable future business
and is driving the future of (e-)mobility.
