There are 63 vehicles in the city council’s generic pool based at Hereford St, which can be driven by staff at any time on work business. Twenty-four vehicles are based at other sites for general staff use, while there are 66 dedicated vehicles for the exclusive use of a single staff member. There are also 44 specialist vehicles allocated to a particular unit. Data provided to the The Star showed, since January, the dedicated vehicles have travelled about 923km on average each month. The Hereford St pool vehicles went about 900km, while those in other locations went about 536km each month. Specialist vehicles travelled an average of 565km. The city council spent $365,112 on fuel for its vehicles this financial year and $382,572 last year. It has teamed up with 12 organisations, including Environment Canterbury, for an electric vehicle shared fleet scheme, which the public can also use for $11.90 an hour. • By Andrew King A SOMALIAN refugee who stabbed two people after kidnapping a pie delivery driver has been denied parole again. Zakariye Mohamed Hussein was jailed for more than six years, with a minimum nonparole period of three years and three months, for the 2012 incident which started in Redwood and ended in Hoon Hay. His parole was denied at a hearing this month, which Hussein declined to attend. Pie delivery driver Marteine Robin, 42, who was kidnapped and stabbed by Hussein, wanted her attacker to remain in prison. “He can stay right where he is, it is the best place for him. I don’t want to see him get out as it seems the likelihood of him re-offending is pretty high,” she said. Hussein’s sentence ends on September 18 next year – just days before Ms Robin’s 43rd birthday. “Happy birthday to me, right?” she said. “Every time I wash my shoulder I can feel the scar [where she was stabbed]. That is every day.” Hussein has been undergoing physiological treatment at an undisclosed facility, a parole hearing report revealed. “He has remained in [withheld] and his condition has largely been stable. There have, from time to time, been occasions where Mr Hussein (sic) has been violent towards hospital staff, the last one being in May of this year,” the report said. The drama started at about 7am on March 15, 2012, when Hussein was disturbed in the grounds of Redwood School by caretaker Noel Batstone. Hussein chased Mr Batstone and a teacher who barricaded themselves inside a classroom and phoned police. In August last year, Mr Batstone said he felt sorry for Hussein. But on Tuesday, he told The Star his opinion had changed. “Keep him locked up. He sounds like he is not ready to be let back out,” he said. After Mr Batstone and the teacher escaped, Hussein, hijacked Ms Robin’s van and ordered her to drive. She told him to “get the f*** out” of her delivery truck. He then forced her at knifepoint to drive him across the city before stabbing her in the shoulder. “After he stabbed me, I asked him what the f**k did you do to my shoulder? He told me to stop swearing. So I told him to get f****d,” she told The Star on Tuesday. The incident escalated when Hussein left the truck near the busy intersection of Hoon Hay and Halswell Rds and then almost fatally stabbed a city council worker who has name suppression. A construction worker then intervened with a crowbar, hitting Hussein on the neck. Police arrived at the scene and pepper sprayed Hussein then shot him in the wrist. Hussein’s lawyer said he was normally a “shy, reserved, polite’’ man when on his medication. But when he didn’t take it, he said it was like Hussein was “possessed by the devil’’. Hussein is due for another parole hearing next year.
