Heritage repairs may have to wait<br />

He said it was going<br />
to cost “astronomical<br />
figures” to repair both the<br />
provincial chambers on<br />
Durham St North and the<br />
Municipal Chambers on<br />
the corner of Oxford Tce<br />
and Worcester Boulevard.<br />
“We have to have a really<br />
big conversation about this<br />
because it will cost a lot of<br />
money.”<br />
Cr Gough said he wanted<br />
to look at whether there<br />
could be other repair<br />
or ownership<br />
options such as a<br />
trust.<br />

back to the 1850s<br />

purpose-built<br />
provincial government<br />
buildings left in the<br />

<strong>The</strong> Municipal Chambers,<br />
also known as Our<br />
City – Otautahi, was the<br />
first Queen Anne Arts and<br />
Craft-style building in the<br />
country. Penfold’s Cottage<br />
was built in the early 1860s<br />
by Captain James Penfold.<br />
Christchurch Heritage<br />
Trust chairwoman Anna<br />
Crighton said those<br />
buildings had been made<br />
weather-tight, and the<br />
city council was<br />
“mothballing.”<br />
“<strong>The</strong> council is leading<br />
heritage values by keeping<br />
these buildings and<br />
mothballing until they can<br />
afford to do the restoration<br />
work.”<br />
<strong>The</strong> draft Long Term<br />
Plan is likely to be adopted<br />
in February before public<br />
consultation. <strong>The</strong> final plan<br />
will be adopted in June.<br />
