Partners in rebuild project
– and rebuilding lives
Two well-established Christchurch companies are
working together on one of the city’s most eagerly
anticipated rebuild projects, QEII.
Apollo Projects is the lead building contractor,
while Aotea Electric is carrying out design build
work on the electrical, automation, electrical for
mechanical, electrical for pool water services and data
communication work, as well as the installation of the
MATV, PA, and electric vehicle charging systems.
Following completion of the tender process in 2016,
construction began at the beginning of this year and
completion is expected by mid-2018.
Project manager for Aotea Electric, Adam Smithies,
says the relationship between the two companies has
been “really good, it’s great to be part of such a nostalgic
rebuild project. Everyone is focused on getting the job
done together,” he says.
Apollo Project’s Iain Ansell describes Aotea Electric
as a “professional company with an impressive track
record”.
“With large projects like this, there’s always the
potential for issues and conflicts, but with Aotea it’s
The new QEII rebuild under construction is progressing well.
been smooth sailing. It’s good when companies work
together and share the vision.”
This isn’t the only project the two companies are
partnering on, however. Both have recently become
sponsors of the Believe Foundation.
The foundation was established to provide lifechanging
opportunities and challenges for young
people whose lives have taken an unconventional path.
Approaching ‘decision points’ in their lives, most of
them lack role models to guide them in making critical
decisions about their future.
The aim of the foundation is to fund the youth to
partake in challenging events, and also to provide a
network of ‘mentors’ who will train and encourage them
in the lead-up to the challenges, and help prepare them
for employment at the completion of the challenge.
For many of the youngsters, it is likely that having
people believe in them will be a rare or new experience.
Last year, the Believe Foundation supported the Te
Rangatahi Tumanako Trust (The Youth Hope Trust)
and the St John of God Hauora Trust, who managed a
team of five young people to train for and compete in
Artist’s
impression
the Mototapu mountain bike race.
The race was a life-changing experience for the young
people, and all of them have continued to embrace the
positive life experiences of the Road to Motatapu, and
translate these to the challenges of everyday life.
Seeking sponsorship for another group of young
people to take part in this year’s race, the Believe
Foundation’s Tim Howe approached Robbie Venrooy
of Aotea Electric.
“We thought it was an amazing idea and we wanted
to get involved,” Robbie says.
“I spoke to my fellow directors and they said yes, they
were keen for the company to be sponsors.”
Apollo Projects director Craig Waghorn says they
were also very happy to sponsor the Believe Foundation
for the second year.
“It’s part of our company culture to support good
causes like this, and we saw this as an outstanding cause.
We are also pleased to have the mutual connection and
tie-in with Aotea on this.”
