Meredith eyes up ASB Classic
• By Gordon Findlater
FRESH OFF winning his first
Canterbury Open title, James
Meredith now hopes to put his
name into one of the best ASB
Classic line-ups ever assembled.
Meredith, 27, will compete in
the New Zealand Tennis Championships
in Auckland next
week. The winner of the tournament
is granted a wildcard entry
into the ASB Classic held in
Auckland in January.
“That’s the goal,” said Meredith.
“Getting there won’t be easy
though, there will be a lot of
quality players on court next
week who have a realistic chance
of doing exactly the same. There
should be some really good
contests,” said Meredith.
Five top-20 world ranked players
are confirmed for next year’s
ASB Classic including 2009 US
Open champion Juan Martin del
Potro, world No 8 Jack Sock and
two-time winner in Auckland
John Isner.
“It’s a huge line-up. To play in
a tournament with names like
that would be a dream,” said
Meredith.
It will be just the second
time Meredith has contested
champion after his Canterbury Open win at the weekend.
the championships. In 2015 he
progressed to the second round
in the singles, and semi-finals
in the doubles, before suffering
back issues which hampered his
play. However, he’s hopeful the
reoccurring issue can be avoided
by concentrating purely on singles.
This will mean playing one
match per day rather than two
games per day over the six-day
event.
“Last time my back kind of
just ran out of steam. This time
I’m looking forward to just
concentrating on singles and
giving that a good crack,” said
Meredith.
Meredith is likely to be seeded
fourth for the championships
behind Finn Tearney, Olly
Sadler and defending champion
Artem Sitak. He shouldn’t be
phased if he sets up a semi-final
meeting with any of the other
top seeds. He recently defeated
Tearney 6-1, (retired) in the
Auckland interclub competition.
He has also previously accounted
for Sitak 7-6, 6-1 at the
2015 Canterbury Open.
At the weekend, Meredith
added his name to the Canterbury
Open trophy. The tournament
has run since 1901 and
contains names such as Onny
Parun, Brian Fairlie, Alistair
Hunt, David Lewis and Mark
Nielson and Rubin Statham.
He cruised through the
opening two rounds of the
tournament before defeating
his brother Matthew Meredith
6-1, 6-4 in the semi-final. In the
final he met Elmwood’s Hayden
Joblin.
After dropping the first set
in an entertaining tiebreaker
Meredith recovered by breaking
early in the second set and
controlling the game from there
to win 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.
The women’s title was won by
Cashmere’s Tessa McCann who
defeated top seed Emily Martin
6-3, 6-1.
Pride secure
another home
football final
• By Gordon Findlater
CANTERBURY United Pride have
booked their fourth straight home
final in the National Women’s
League.
Going into Sunday’s final round
of action, the Pride needed a win to
keep their hopes of a title defence
alive. However, with other results
going their way it means they
finished at the top of the roundrobin
standings and have advanced
directly to the final at English Park
on December 10.
A young Pride team, depleted of
their four national team players,
defeated Central Football 3-2 in
Palmerston North. The Pride were
rocked by an early Central goal when
Rose Morton found the net. But the
Pride soon hit back with a brace to
Cody Taylor putting them in front
and the vital win seemed secure
when Rebecca Lake made it 3-1.
Football Ferns Annalie Longo,
Victoria Esson, Meikayla Moore
and Aimee Phillips have all now
retuned from national duties in
Thailand and will be available for
the final at English Park.
The Pride will meet the winner of
the Auckland Football and Southern
United match this weekend.
