CHRISTMAS MIGHT be right<br />

on the radar but there’s another<br />

big event looming too – the<br />

City2Surf.<br />

Yep, it’s only a handful of<br />

months away (see page 3) so it’s<br />

time to start lacing up those<br />

running shoes and pound the<br />

pavement or local park to get in<br />

some sort of shape.<br />

<strong>The</strong> great thing about the<br />

City2Surf – and this hasn’t<br />

changed over the decades – is<br />

that anyone regardless of shape<br />

or fitness level can take part.<br />

And this is why it has survived<br />

for so long, and each year<br />

thousands turn up.<br />

A face that will appear on<br />

the marketing of City2Surf this<br />

year is Jesel Royokada, a Fijian<br />

pastor.<br />

Jesel was ecstatic when he<br />

finished the event (I’m not calling<br />

it a race) last year, and this<br />

time around is encouraging<br />

others, including his congregation<br />

to run with him for<br />

March’s event.<br />

And remember it’s a family<br />

event – children 10 and under<br />

are free to participate.<br />

This day in history saw the opening<br />

of Memorial Ave on <strong>November</strong><br />

26, 1959. It is a memorial to<br />

airmen killed in World War 2. On<br />

<strong>November</strong> 27, 1985, the remains of<br />

a swimming pool were uncovered<br />

when excavating behind the No 1<br />

stand at Lancaster Park. It was used<br />

as a venue for the 1907 Australian<br />

and New Zealand Swimming<br />

Championships. On <strong>November</strong><br />

28, 1893, women voted for the first<br />

time in Parliamentary elections. On<br />

Walk of <strong>Star</strong>s for city<br />

pavement<br />

the same day in 1964, Lyttelton’s<br />

Cashin Quay was opened. <strong>The</strong><br />

engineering techniques used in<br />

reclaiming this area were unique<br />

in the world. On <strong>November</strong> 29,<br />

1978, rock singer David Bowie<br />

performed at QE II Park. On<br />

December 1, 1889, the first New<br />

Zealand-built locomotive was<br />

completed at Addington railway<br />

workshops. On the same day in<br />

1975, the Rolleston satellite town<br />

project was scrapped.<br />
