This year I played in the Canterbury senior men’s team. I used to do a bit of coaching but it’s quite hard fitting it all in with playing and shift work. The police are very understanding, and they promote having a good healthy work life balance. If you’re playing reasonably high level sport, they will accommodate it. You and Constable Sam Crozier were snapped strutting your stuff in the Cup Day fashion parade. How did you get roped into that? It was a stitch up (laughs). Inspector Waretini – he didn’t so much as ask, it was more that he told us. Sam and I got this email saying we had to report to this tent at this time. And I was like ‘I know what this is’. We got a lot of stick from our workmates for it, but it was good fun, I’ve got no shame. I think Sam enjoyed it more than I did, he got more into it. About 10 people recognised me on the day from the video we did just prior to Cup and Show Week where I did the thing with the hands. It’s from a movie called Talladega Nights with Will Ferrell where he’s trying to give an interview and he keeps trying to put his hands on the microphone and the reporter keeps saying ‘can you put your hands down’, and he says ‘I don’t know where to put my hands’. The Canterbury Police Facebook page is very engaging. Why do you think it’s so important to get people seeing that side of police? It’s really good at breaking down barriers – we are people too. But behind every post, there is a message. It’s breaking down police being seen as strictly law enforcement or the fun police. We like to show we can have a bit of fun as well. Yes, there’s a time to be serious, but we like to have a good time – and it works. The fashion Cup Day video had 386,000 views and it was all around the world. My family in the United Kingdom were sharing it. Is there any case or moment that has stuck with you from the job? Probably my first fatal car crash, which was in Auckland. I really struggled. The guy who died was the same age as me, he was on his way to work and wasn’t supposed to work that day but his colleague had applied for COMPETITIVE: Most of Ben Rutherford’s spare time is spent playing hockey. PHOTO: GEOFF SOPER leave and had been denied, so this guy offered to work the shift. I saw me in him – that’s something I would do. He just had his birthday and he got hit by a drink driver and killed. I was the first car there, and he was still alive. I crawled into the car to try and keep him alive but because of the way the car was bent, we couldn’t move him. So he died from asphyxia. That took a lot to get over, probably because it was my first one. The most recent was in Ashburton where a man was stabbed to death. I was the first car there and he had two stab wounds. I basically put my fingers in his chest and did CPR until the ambulance arrived. We thought we had done really well to keep him alive, but he died in the hallway. We’ve got a (court) trial for that next year. On a lighter note, do any shenanigans happen here in the office? It’s a very respectful environment because we’ve got such diversity. There is the occasional time if you leave your notebook on the printer, it might be found stuck on the roof. Everybody’s pretty quick to point out to you if you end up on the tv news or in the paper, you owe them a chocolate cake. You might owe your colleagues a cake after this. So your family is from the UK aren’t they? Yes, my parents moved here in 1988. My dad’s parents were missionaries in Kenya, so Dad grew up there, and after his parents had finished their stint there, they moved back to the UK. That’s where he met my mum. I was lucky enough to go to Kenya on a mission trip with school for six weeks to help there. To see where my dad grew up and experience a different culture was awesome. My wife and I went over to the UK and Europe last year to experience a bit of an OE. How did you two meet? Sarah and I met through hockey down here, she’s a keen hockey player, she’s better than I am. She plays for the Canterbury Cats. Her parents here in Christchurch have taken me in like an adopted son.
