Going Forward
By: Rana Goodman / On My Soapbox
The huge turnout for the guardianship
seminars and sign-ups of the new nomination
forms has been overwhelming and I cannot tell you
how exciting that has been. I was so proud to be the first person ever to
file this nomination form at the Secretary of State’s office on January
2 nd .
The response we have received from readers confirms that so many
more of you will have an extra layer of protection now against this
outrageous form of elder abuse. The only downside, in my opinion,
was the two communities that didn’t seem to understand, or see this as
an important community safety project, and closed the door to anyone
other than their residents.
I’m also still very concerned about some of the abuses we are
continually hearing about from the legal community and care
facilities. And this will be the beginning focus of our newly named nonprofit:
Vegas Voice Elder Hub and our 4 R’s program.
seniors as we find them;
since we strongly believe
you have a right to know.
Assisted living and
nursing facilities are
not cheap, therefore if
someone you care about
needs to be in one, we
will give you as many
options as we can with a
“report card” as we rate
them.
forms from our January seminars
to Nevada Secretary of State Lockbox
Program Officer Lupita Villanueva.
Formerly named Nevada Association to Stop Guardian & Elder
Abuse, our Vegas Voice Elder Hub, will be the “umbrella” for our
programs. With our fellow seniors-volunteers we want to provide the
following in building our 4 R’s.
1.References: A listing of suggested facilities that others have used,
and believe are good places and vendors for seniors.
2.Referrals: Sources, facilities, businesses and people we have
either checked out, inspected or used and find favorable to the senior
community.
3. Reviews: Good, bad, or otherwise, we will give the review of
the senior who dealt with this facility, person or vendor and give a
“Consumer Report” type of review for members to use.
4.Resources: Suggestions of helpful businesses and people; good,
useful, fun and/or interesting places for seniors in the valley.
A perfect example of things you will find under Reviews would be a
report on one attorney who has written trusts for several of our readers.
This attorney disregarded instructions from the client when it came
to the intended trustee and placed his own name in its place. When the
client objected and refused to pay the bill until the trust document was
rectified, the lawyer threatened to file suit against them and foreclose on
their home.
Since we are not taking any advertising or payment of any kind from
anyone involved in this project, we are hoping the 4Rs listings will be
much like “Consumer Reports.” We will list conditions and “attitudes” to
NOTICE: Temporary Guardianship Lockbox Closed
By: Rana Goodman/Political Editor
As I previously mentioned, your response to our Guardianship
seminars was unprecedented. Our 6 seminars drew an audience of over
1,000 readers. It is the first time in our history that we had to prohibit
people from attending, as we literally “sold-out” at two communities.
We will try and schedule more seminars for those who wish to attend in
the near future.
As I mentioned in our January and February editions, for those of
you who took advantage of our Vegas Voice temporary lockbox and as
the picture shows, your guardianship nomination form has been
shredded and forever destroyed.
Make sure you use the new form (you can download it from our
Vegas Voice website: www. thevegasvoice.net.) and please do not hesitate
to contact me (rana@thevegasvoice.net) if you have any questions.
