Most wedding photographers shoot in colour and
digitally convert some of the images into black and
white using editing software. They can also convert
black and white digital images back into colour,
which black and white film was unable to do.
BLACK & WHITE
With the wonderful colour and
digital image technology available,
it’s often a surprise that people still
love black and white photographs.
But they provide exceptional detail,
dramatic contrast between dark and
light as well as subtle shades of grey
and offer an ageless look that looks
great for decades to come. Current
interest in vintage and retro
weddings has made black and white
images even more popular and
once framed, they make a timeless
display that suits any décor.
SEPIA IMAGES
The red-brown tones of sepia
images are usually associated with
old photos but the technique
has been popular for decades.
Its return to popularity has now
been aided by the development
of sepia filters in digital cameras.
The effect was achieved by
photographic “toning” – a
chemical process during
printing, but today sepia images
are effectively produced using
digital filters or post-production
photo-shop software programmes.
SELECTIVE COLOUR
Sometimes referred to as “spot
colour”, this technique is an
image editing technique where
a colour photo is predominantly
converted to black and white,
but leaves an area of the photo
or an item in colour. Selective
colour is in popular usage for
advertising but can produce
eye catching wedding photos
where flowers or a car remain
in colour when everything else
is black and white.
SOFT FOCUS
This film and photographic
technique features a deliberate
blurring of definition. It is used
to create a dreamlike quality to
the image and is understandably
popular with bridal couples for
their wedding photographs.
professional wedding
photographer on the style
of photography they can
produce for you and the costs
associated with a variety of
effects and techniques.
