Flowers are the
ultimate bridal
accessory combining
visual impact with
fragrance and
romance. But even
the simplest bouquet
needs to be chosen
with care and created
with skill so that it
complements your
gown, stands out in
the photos and reflects
your taste whether
traditional, classic, bold
or innovative.
Consider the style of your
gown when you are choosing
the shape of your bouquet.
The popularity of particular flowers
depends on fashions and seasons and the
vast variety of blooms, colours and effects
means every bouquet is individual. However
there are five main shapes that florists use to
develop bouquet arrangements.
THE POSY is traditionally round in shape and
uses flowers of equal size to maintain the shape.
Alternatively modern posies feature flowers
grouped in a structured bunched effect. The original
posies contained sweet smelling flowers and herbs
to ward off germs and diseases! Modern posies can
be made small enough for a little flower girl and
are ideal for shorter stemmed spring flowers and
popular miniature roses.
THE TEARDROP bouquet is a floral classic.
Essentially a posy at the top, the addition of a trail
replicates the teardrop shape. A variety of flowers
and greenery can be used, with blooms being wired
to hold them in place. Teardrops can be large or
small to suit the individual bride and the style of her
gown and a combination of different flowers and
colours can be used effectively.
THE SHEAF or arm spray uses long stemmed
blooms bound together with ribbon or natural
fibres like flax or greenery. Held along the
forearm or hanging downwards from the hand,
roses, lilies, gladioli, gerberas and orchids are
popular flowers for a sheaf arrangement.
THE HAND TIED bouquet with a “just picked”
look is extremely popular for both modern and
vintage weddings. The flowers are not wired
and look natural, the stems are visible and the
gathered flowers are loosely tied with ribbon.
Popular versions include roses, peonies, sweet peas,
freesias and ranunculas.
