Gold, platinum, diamonds and other
gemstones last indefinitely, but if you want
them to stay dazzling for decades, you
need to keep them clean!
You should take them to a jeweller annually for a
professional clean, polish and check to ensure the
stones are still secure in the setting. But in between
you can keep jewellery clean and shiny yourself by
using simple easy methods at home:
Promise rings indicate
that there is a relationship
and while the couple
may not yet be ready
for a formal engagement
and marriage, they
are committed to one
another.
Some couples see the
promise ring as a step towards a
future engagement. For others
the trend is adopted by couples
who set up home together
without the expectation of
marriage, so the ring becomes
an alternative to an engagement
or wedding ring.
However the trend is not
a new one. Giving a ring as a
promise of affection dates back
centuries to the “posy” ring
which was engraved with a
romantic sentiment; the “pansy”
ring comes from the French
word “penser” meaning “to
think; the “friendship “ring was
given when a girl and boy were
too young for an engagement
and the college “pin” in America
meant the couple were dating
seriously or “going steady.”
Depending on the age of
the couple and the stage
of their relationship,
a promise ring can be
simple and inexpensive
or more elaborate and
valuable. Inexpensive
versions are
often sterling
silver and
can be found
at costume
jewellery outlets,
department stores
and online stores, while those
that are gold and set with
precious stones are designed
and sold at a jewellers.
The design of the ring
may have meaningful motifs
like hearts (as in the Celtic
Claddagh ring), engrave the
names of the couple on the
inside or outside of the ring or
use birthstones in the setting.
But regardless of the cost, a
promise ring is about feelings
and therefore its true value is
intrinsic.
There’s not always a special
proposal with a promise ring
but it is most often given on an
anniversary of the first date, on
Valentine’s Day, on a birthday
or the start of a New Year.
Promise rings can be worn on
any finger and on either hand,
although usually the intent is
the 3rd finger of the left hand.
Sometimes the ring is worn
on a chain round the neck,
especially if the “promise” is a
secret.
