jo<strong>in</strong>s 2009 <strong>Vancouver</strong> Poetry Slam’s Grand Slam<br />

Champion RC Weslowski and Sasha Langford,<br />

<strong>Vancouver</strong>’s representative at the 2009 Women<br />

of the World Poetry Slam <strong>in</strong> Detroit, for a<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g of creativity and fast talk<strong>in</strong>g. This spoken<br />

word, poetry and storytell<strong>in</strong>g on the fl y not only<br />

pushes the boundaries of “what is poetry” but<br />

also encompasses all manner of word-based art.<br />

At the heart of great stories are often great<br />

missions to fi nd the miss<strong>in</strong>g diamond, to save<br />

the family, to solve the mystery of the murder.<br />

Australian fi rst novelist Richard Newsome and<br />

Canadian legend and Governor General’s Award<br />

w<strong>in</strong>ner Kenneth Oppel have each created<br />

missions that test their heroes and keep readers<br />

fasc<strong>in</strong>ated. Newsome’s The Billionaire’s Curse,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the style of Indiana Jones, is set <strong>in</strong> London<br />

where Gerald, his protagonist, is thrust <strong>in</strong>to<br />

secret passageways, a musty bookshop and an<br />

ancient crypt. Oppel’s Half Brother forces Ben to<br />

risk everyth<strong>in</strong>g he knows <strong>in</strong> his mission to save<br />

his baby “brother,” a chimpanzee named Zan.<br />

Un garçon vit seul avec sa grand-mère et une nouvelle élève de<br />

sa classe le prend sous son aile, la seule fi lle d’une famille de<br />

13 enfants. Un garçon arabe et une fi lle juive se rencontrent et<br />

lors de discussions au téléphone, ils apprennent à connaître leurs<br />

cultures respectives et deviennent des amis. Deux amis créent<br />

un club dont les activités aideront à sauver la planète. Imarvaluk,<br />

qui vit dans sa collectivité <strong>in</strong>upiaq sur une petite île entre la Russie<br />

et l’Alaska, connait bien les diffi cultés qu’apporte le changement<br />

climatique pour sa famille et son pays. Am<strong>in</strong>a, qui vit dans la peur<br />

dans un pays en guerre, trouve l’espoir. Ces différents livres écrits<br />

par Susie Morgenstern et Jacques Pasquet nous font découvrir<br />

les défi s et les possibilités de l’amitié et de la communauté.<br />

Ian McAllister has spent 20 years work<strong>in</strong>g for and liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

Great Bear Ra<strong>in</strong>forest <strong>in</strong> BC. He chronicles the life of grizzlies,<br />

black bears and spirit bears that also live <strong>in</strong> this unique region,<br />

dependent on the abundance of salmon to survive and thrive.<br />

Based on his book The Salmon Bears, his visual presentation<br />

of the four seasons and how the bears fi sh, track and live <strong>in</strong><br />

community is gorgeous. Readers will come away with renewed<br />

awe for the urgent need to preserve this environment and the<br />

creatures that <strong>in</strong>habit it.<br />
