MAURICIO SEGURA<br />

Mauricio Segura was born <strong>in</strong> Temuco, Chile <strong>in</strong> 1969 and<br />
immigrated to Québec with his parents as a child. He studied<br />
economics at the Université de Montréal and French literature<br />
at McGill University. The author of two novels and a book about<br />
French-Canadian perceptions of Lat<strong>in</strong> America, Segura lives <strong>in</strong><br />
Montreal where he is a well-known journalist and commentator on immigrant<br />
issues. His fi rst novel, Black Alley, has recently been translated <strong>in</strong>to English.<br />
SARAH SELECKY<br />
ONTARIO, EVENTS 64, 65<br />
Sarah Selecky grew up <strong>in</strong> Northern Ontario and Southern<br />
Indiana. Her stories have been published <strong>in</strong> The Walrus,<br />
Geist, Prairie Fire, The New Quarterly and The Journey Prize<br />
Anthology. She earned her MFA <strong>in</strong> Creative Writ<strong>in</strong>g at the<br />
University of British Columbia and has been teach<strong>in</strong>g creative<br />
writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> her liv<strong>in</strong>g room for the past 10 years. This Cake is for the Party is her<br />
fi rst book. She currently lives <strong>in</strong> Toronto.<br />

KAMILA SHAMSIE<br />
PAKISTAN / UNITED KINGDOM, EVENTS 9, 46<br />
Kamila Shamsie’s fi rst novel, In The City by the Sea, was<br />
shortlisted for the John Llewelyn Rhys Prize <strong>in</strong> the UK, and<br />
received the Prime M<strong>in</strong>ister’s Award for Literature <strong>in</strong> Pakistan <strong>in</strong><br />
1999. Her 2000 novel Salt and Saffron led to Shamsie’s selection<br />
as one of Orange’s “21 <strong>Writers</strong> of the 21st Century.” She<br />
received awards for her next two novels, Kartography and Broken Verses, and her<br />
most recent, Burnt Shadows, was longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction.<br />

KATHRYN E. SHOEMAKER<br />
BRITISH COLUMBIA, EVENT 14<br />
Kathryn E. Shoemaker has illustrated more than 40 books<br />
for children, as well as authored four of them, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the<br />
bestsell<strong>in</strong>g Creative Christmas. She has broad experience as<br />
an art teacher, curriculum specialist, fi lmmaker and fundraiser<br />
and has taught courses on illustrat<strong>in</strong>g children’s books for<br />
more than 10 years. Her latest collaboration with Irene N. Watts produced No<br />
Pets Allowed, the story of a brave dog named Lucky.<br />
GARY SHTEYNGART<br />
UNITED STATES, SPECIAL EVENT<br />
Gary Shteyngart’s debut novel, The Russian Debutante’s<br />
Handbook, won the Stephen Crane Award for First Fiction and<br />
the National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. His second novel,<br />
Absurdistan, was named one of the 10 Best Books of the Year by<br />
The New York Times Book Review. He has been selected as one<br />
of Granta’s Best Young American Novelists and was recently <strong>in</strong>cluded on the The<br />
New Yorker’s Best 20 Under 40 list. His new novel is Super Sad True Love Story.<br />
He lives <strong>in</strong> New York City.<br />
