Dave Bid<strong>in</strong>i, formerly of the Rheostatics,<br />
is the author of n<strong>in</strong>e books, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
Tropic of Hockey, which was made <strong>in</strong>to<br />
the Genie Award–w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g feature fi lm,<br />
Hockey Nomad. Another of his books,<br />
Baseballissimo, was recently optioned for both fi lm and<br />
television. Bid<strong>in</strong>i’s journalism has earned him numerous<br />
National Magaz<strong>in</strong>e Awards. His new book is Home and<br />
Away: In Search of Dreams at the Homeless World Cup<br />
of Soccer.<br />
SANDRA BIRDSELL<br />

Sandra Birdsell’s eight books have<br />
received critical acclaim and numerous<br />
literary prizes and nom<strong>in</strong>ations, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
a Scotiabank Giller Prize nom<strong>in</strong>ation for<br />
The Russländer and Governor General’s<br />
Award nom<strong>in</strong>ations for The Two-Headed Calf and The<br />
Chrome Suite. In 1993 she was awarded one of Canada’s<br />
most prestigious literary prizes, the Marion Engel Award,<br />
an honour given to a female writer <strong>in</strong> mid-career. She<br />
was born and raised <strong>in</strong> W<strong>in</strong>nipeg, and currently lives <strong>in</strong><br />
Saskatchewan. Her new novel is Wait<strong>in</strong>g for Joe.<br />

GAIL BOWEN<br />

Gail Bowen’s Joanne Kilbourn mysteries<br />
have made her one of Canada’s most<br />
popular crime writers. The fi rst book <strong>in</strong><br />
the series, Deadly Appearances, was<br />
nom<strong>in</strong>ated for the W.H. Smith-Books <strong>in</strong><br />
Canada First Novel Award. Some of her mysteries have<br />
been produced as made-for-television features. Bowen’s<br />
latest novel, The Nest<strong>in</strong>g Dolls, has been praised as one<br />
of her best. Head of the English Department at the First<br />
Nations University of Canada, Bowen lives <strong>in</strong> Reg<strong>in</strong>a.<br />

GEORGE BOWERING<br />

George Bower<strong>in</strong>g, Canada’s fi rst Poet<br />
Laureate, was born <strong>in</strong> the Okanagan. He<br />
has taught literature at the University<br />
of Calgary, the University of Western<br />
Ontario and Simon Fraser University. A<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>guished novelist, poet, editor, professor, historian<br />
and tireless supporter of fellow writers, Bower<strong>in</strong>g has<br />
authored more than 80 books, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g works of poetry,<br />
fi ction, autobiography, biography and youth fi ction. His<br />
latest collection of poetry is My Darl<strong>in</strong>g Nellie Gray.<br />
MARTHA BROOKS<br />
MANITOBA, EVENTS 25, 29<br />
Martha Brooks is an award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />
novelist, playwright and jazz s<strong>in</strong>ger whose<br />
books have been published worldwide<br />
and have earned her a Governor General’s<br />
Award and the Vicky Metcalf Award for<br />
a body of work. She was raised <strong>in</strong> a medical family on the<br />
grounds of the now-defunct Manitoba Sanatorium, a sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and experience that <strong>in</strong>spired her new book, Queen of Hearts.<br />
The novel takes place <strong>in</strong> rural Manitoba dur<strong>in</strong>g the Second<br />
World War and deals with surviv<strong>in</strong>g loss while fi nd<strong>in</strong>g<br />
friendship and love <strong>in</strong> surpris<strong>in</strong>g places.
