YANN MARTEL<br />
SASKATCHEWAN, EVENTS 19, 37, 48<br />
Yann Martel studied philosophy at Trent University, worked<br />
odd jobs—tree planter, dishwasher, security guard—and<br />
travelled widely before turn<strong>in</strong>g to writ<strong>in</strong>g. He was awarded<br />
the Journey Prize for the title story <strong>in</strong> The Facts Beh<strong>in</strong>d the<br />
Hels<strong>in</strong>ki Roccamatios. His second novel, Life of Pi, won a<br />
number of awards, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g the 2002 Man Booker Prize. His most recent<br />
books are What Is Stephen Harper Read<strong>in</strong>g? and his highly anticipated novel,<br />
Beatrice & Virgil. Martel lives <strong>in</strong> Saskatoon.<br />

IAN MCALLISTER<br />

Ian McAllister is an award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g photographer and<br />
fi lmmaker, and a found<strong>in</strong>g director of both the Ra<strong>in</strong>coast<br />
Conservation Society and Pacifi c Wild. He lives with his family<br />
on an island <strong>in</strong> the heart of the Great Bear Ra<strong>in</strong>forest, a sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
that <strong>in</strong>spires his writ<strong>in</strong>g and photography. His latest book,<br />
The Sea Wolves, is a study of a highly social, fi ercely <strong>in</strong>telligent and genetically<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>ct stra<strong>in</strong> of wolves—one that swims and fi shes <strong>in</strong> the Great Bear Ra<strong>in</strong>forest<br />
on British Columbia’s rugged west coast.<br />
DON MCKAY<br />
NEWFOUNDLAND, EVENTS 38, 44<br />
Don McKay is the author of 11 books of poetry, most recently<br />
Strike/Slip. He has won two Governor General’s Awards for<br />
poetry and has been shortlisted twice for the Griffi n Poetry<br />
Prize, most recently for Camber: Selected Poems, which was a<br />
Globe and Mail Notable Book of the Year. McKay is also known<br />
as a poetry editor, and he has taught poetry <strong>in</strong> universities across the country.<br />

SHARON E. MCKAY<br />

Sharon E. McKay is an award-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g author of more than<br />
14 books and the fi rst writer of young adult fi ction to receive<br />
the title of War Artist from the Canadian Forces. In 2009 she<br />
travelled to Afghanistan to do research for her new novel,<br />
Thunder Over Kandahar. Dur<strong>in</strong>g her stay she spent time <strong>in</strong><br />
villages where she met Afghanis of all ages and was able to hear fi rst-hand<br />
stories about life <strong>in</strong> a war zone.<br />
STUART MCLEAN<br />
ONTARIO, SPECIAL EVENT<br />
Master storyteller and humorist Stuart McLean is the author<br />
of several bestsell<strong>in</strong>g books, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g V<strong>in</strong>yl Cafe Diaries,<br />
which won the short fi ction award from the Canadian<br />
Authors Association; Home from the V<strong>in</strong>yl Cafe and V<strong>in</strong>yl<br />
Cafe Unplugged, which both won the Stephen Leacock<br />
Award for Humour; and Welcome Home: Travels <strong>in</strong> Smalltown Canada,<br />
which won the CAA’s award for non-fi ction. His latest book is The V<strong>in</strong>yl Café<br />
Notebooks, a wonderfully eclectic essay collection selected from 15 years of<br />
radio-show archives and re-edited by the author.<br />

STEVE MCORMOND<br />
ONTARIO, EVENTS 44, 58<br />
Steve McOrmond’s fi rst poetry collection, Lean Days, was<br />
shortlisted for the Gerald Lampert Award. His second, Primer<br />
on the Hereafter, was awarded the Atlantic Poetry Prize.<br />
Orig<strong>in</strong>ally from Pr<strong>in</strong>ce Edward Island, he now lives <strong>in</strong> Toronto.<br />
His latest collection is The Good News About Armageddon.<br />
KATIE SMITH MILWAY<br />
UNITED STATES, EVENTS 4, 18<br />
Katie Smith Milway’s fi rst book, One Hen: How One Small<br />
Loan Made a Big Difference, received <strong>in</strong>ternational acclaim<br />
for enlist<strong>in</strong>g children <strong>in</strong> the cause of microfi nance. She is a<br />
partner at the Bridgespan Group, a consultant to non-profi ts<br />
and philanthropists. Her latest book, The Good Garden: How<br />
One Family Went from Hunger to Hav<strong>in</strong>g Enough, provides children with the<br />
opportunity to become part of the movement to grow “good gardens” and<br />
foster food security.<br />
DAVID MITCHELL<br />
UNITED KINGDOM, EVENTS 53, 60, 62<br />
David Mitchell is the acclaimed author of the novels Black<br />
Swan Green, which was selected as one of the 10 Best Books<br />
of the Year by Time; Cloud Atlas, which was a Man Booker<br />
Prize fi nalist; Number9Dream, which was shortlisted for the<br />
Booker as well as the James Tait Black Memorial Prize; and<br />
Ghostwritten, awarded the Mail on Sunday/John Llewellyn Rhys Prize for best<br />
book by a writer under 35 and shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. His<br />
new book is The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet. He lives <strong>in</strong> Ireland.<br />

SUSIE MORGENSTERN<br />
FRANCE, EVENTS 11, 17, 28<br />
Susie Morgenstern was born <strong>in</strong> the US. Thanks to fall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
love with, and marry<strong>in</strong>g, a French mathematician, she has<br />
lived much of her adult life (more than 30 years) <strong>in</strong> France.<br />
Her books have been translated <strong>in</strong>to numerous languages<br />
and received many prizes, with some be<strong>in</strong>g adapted for fi lm<br />
and television. In 2005, she was named a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres, <strong>in</strong><br />
honour of her dist<strong>in</strong>guished literary contributions.<br />

Susie Morgenstern est une auteure française d’orig<strong>in</strong>e américa<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>in</strong>stallée<br />
en France et mariée à un mathématicien français. Auteur prolifi que, elle se<br />
consacre à l’écriture de romans et d’albums pour la jeunesse. Certa<strong>in</strong>s de ses<br />
romans ont été adaptés au c<strong>in</strong>éma ou à la télévision, comme L’amerloque en<br />
1996. Les ouvrages de Susie Morgenstern sont traduits dans de nombreuses<br />
langues. En 2005, elle a été décorée Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres,<br />
une dist<strong>in</strong>ction honorifi que qui récompense «les personnes qui se sont<br />
dist<strong>in</strong>guées par leur création dans le doma<strong>in</strong>e artistique ou littéraire».<br />
Le Consulat général de France à <strong>Vancouver</strong> assume les coüts de déplacement de Susie Morgenstern.
