YIYUN LI<br />

Yiyun Li is the author of A Thousand Years of Good Prayers<br />

and The Vagrants. A native of Beij<strong>in</strong>g and a graduate of the<br />

Iowa <strong>Writers</strong>’ Workshop, she is the recipient of the Frank<br />

O’Connor <strong>International</strong> Short Story Award, the Hem<strong>in</strong>gway<br />

Foundation/PEN Award, the Whit<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Writers</strong>’ Award, and<br />

the Guardian First Book Award. In 2007, Granta named her one of the Best<br />

American Novelists Under 35, and she was recently <strong>in</strong>cluded on The New<br />

Yorker’s list of the Top 20 Authors Under 40. Her new collection of stories is<br />

Gold Boy, Emerald Girl.<br />

Billie Liv<strong>in</strong>gston published her critically acclaimed fi rst novel,<br />

Go<strong>in</strong>g Down Sw<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>in</strong> 2000 and has s<strong>in</strong>ce been published<br />

<strong>in</strong>ternationally. Her second novel, Cease to Blush, was a<br />

Globe and Mail Best Book, and her collection of poetry, Chick<br />

at the Back of the Church, was a fi nalist for the Pat Lowther<br />

Memorial Award. She is at the <strong>Festival</strong> this year with a new collection of short<br />

stories, Greedy Little Eyes.<br />

Derek Lundy is the bestsell<strong>in</strong>g author of Godforsaken Sea:<br />

Rac<strong>in</strong>g The World’s Most Dangerous Waters, The Way of a<br />

Ship: A Square-Rigger Voyage <strong>in</strong> the Last Days of Sail and<br />

The Bloody Red Hand: A Journey Through Truth, Myth and<br />

Terror <strong>in</strong> Northern Ireland. Lundy’s latest book is Borderlands,<br />

a non-fi ction account of his motorcycle trek along the US borders to explore the<br />

American obsession with security. He lives and rides on Salt Spr<strong>in</strong>g Island, BC.<br />

CLAUDIO MAGRIS<br />

ITALY, EVENT 19<br />

Claudio Magris is a critic, journalist, novelist and translator<br />

and one of Europe’s lead<strong>in</strong>g cultural philosophers. His cultural<br />

and literary non-fi ction titles have won him particular acclaim<br />

worldwide: Danube has been translated <strong>in</strong>to more than 20<br />

languages and Microcosms received the 1997 Premio Strega.<br />

His new novel, acclaimed as a masterpiece on its <strong>in</strong>itial publication <strong>in</strong> Italy, is<br />

Bl<strong>in</strong>dly. Magris teaches at the University of Trieste.<br />

Karl Marlantes is a graduate of Yale University and was a<br />

Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University. He served as a Mar<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

Vietnam, where he was awarded the Navy Cross, the Bronze<br />

Star, two Navy Commendation Medals for Valor, two Purple<br />

Hearts and 10 Medals. His Vietnam experience <strong>in</strong>forms his<br />

acclaimed fi rst novel, Matterhorn, which he crafted over a period of 30 years.<br />

He lives <strong>in</strong> rural Wash<strong>in</strong>gton state.<br />
