novel about political life <strong>in</strong> Canada won the Stephen Leacock Award for Humour.<br />

Ken F<strong>in</strong>kleman, best known as the writer, creator and producer of CBC TV’s The<br />

Newsroom, has now written Noah’s Turn, <strong>in</strong> which his dark and satiric humour<br />

comes through on every page. Anosh Irani can’t help but <strong>in</strong>fuse his fi ction and<br />

plays, however dark th<strong>in</strong>gs get, with a healthy dose of fun. Share a laugh with<br />

these four gents as they discuss humour <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

left with stories about it. My book is about a new choice of stories.” So says the<br />

narrator of Yann Martel’s novel Beatrice & Virgil, and so says the Man Booker<br />

Prize-w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g author himself about his book which, as soon as it hit the shelves,<br />

sparked much discussion and debate about the limits of representation. To his<br />

critics, Martel responds: “By free<strong>in</strong>g up our representations of the Holocaust we<br />

will secure, overall, a greater, more nuanced and useful understand<strong>in</strong>g of it.” Jo<strong>in</strong><br />

this thoughtful and respected author for a discussion of allegory and glean new<br />

<strong>in</strong>sights <strong>in</strong>to the nature of storytell<strong>in</strong>g itself.<br />

Paul Quarr<strong>in</strong>gton, novelist, musician, screenwriter and non-fi ction writer, passed<br />

away <strong>in</strong> January 2010. Even after be<strong>in</strong>g diagnosed with lung cancer, Quarr<strong>in</strong>gton<br />

embarked on concert tours with his band Porkbelly Futures, produced his own<br />

solo CD and the Porkbelly’s third release, completed his non-fi ction memoir, Cigar<br />

Box Banjo: Notes on Music and Life, and was the subject of a feature-length<br />

documentary. Tonight you’ll have the chance to view the documentary, <strong>in</strong> which he<br />

comes to terms with his life and death through the power of music, and hear more<br />

about this remarkable man from both his publisher and one of his many friends.<br />
