More than $20,000 in one night:
that is what was raised by 12 ambitious
Southwest Orlando teenagers
who wanted to make a difference
for children battling life-threatening
illnesses. The inaugural St. Jude
Presents One in a Million:
A Night of Magic and Hope
took place at Rosen JCC, raising
$20,130 for children and teenagers
fighting cancer and other harmful diseases
at St. Jude Children’s Research
Hospital.
The event marked the first time teenagers
ran their own teen-oriented gala
to benefit St. Jude, doing everything
from peer-to-peer fundraising to contacting
businesses for donations to the
actual setup and participation in their
homecoming/prom-themed event.
“We wanted this first-ever event [to
be] completely run by teens, for teens,
with minimal adult help, so that we
could show we were responsible and
could do this,” said Zayna JeBailey
of Windermere, chair of the event
and a sophomore at Montverde
Academy. “Helping that many people
with that much money is great.”
SOUTHWEST SPOTLIGHT
A Night of Magic & Hope
First-Ever Teen Gala for St. Jude Doubles Its Goal
Fundraising & More
It all began with an idea to do something
different for a worthy cause.
Zayna had spent years helping her
mother, Charlotte JeBailey, with
charity events, recently St. Jude adult
galas. While assisting, Zayna learned
that the only St. Jude events led by children
and teenagers were marathons
and school events, but no galas.
“My mom wanted me to try something
different, and we worked together
to pick 15 of my friends [who]
we thought were leaderlike people in
their schools,” she said. “We got kids
from seven different schools to come
together and raise money for St. Jude.”
An initial meeting with a St. Jude
representative guided the teenagers in
what to do for fundraising and putting
by Blair Parke
together a gala, with the agreed-upon
idea of a “homecoming/prom” theme
that would appeal to teenagers.
Committee members soon hit the
ground running, with Zayna and her
a Winter Garden resident and
sophomore at Foundation Academy.
Scheduling conflicts first set the number
attending at 50, but the gala ended
up totaling 80 people in attendance.
The First Academy junior and
committee member Caleb Gordon
of Windermere brought more than
12 friends and raised $900 through
a candy-gram drive and encouraging
fellow students and parents to donate.
“I learned it is a lot harder to [raise
funds] than expected, but I would
vice chair, Anna Binkley, using
spreadsheets to divide up tasks for
everyone in the committee. The tasks
ranged from reaching out to committee
member contacts for donation collections
to calling venues and businesses
to secure a location, food, a disc jockey
and even a photo booth.
“We wanted to spend as little money
as possible so that we could make
more money for St. Jude,” Zayna said.
The initial goal was set for $10,000,
with the minimum to raise for the event
per person at $100; the more raised
above that amount, the participant
could bring one or more friends to the
event. Some committee members even
got teachers involved to encourage students
to donate.
However, the teenagers learned
quickly about the trials of fundraising,
even for a great cause like St. Jude.
“We got a lot of noes, which is
something we learned, in terms of still
trying and keep asking, because eventually,
you will get yeses,” said Anna,
absolutely do this event again,” he
said. “It was a great experience. It
felt good to raise that money and go
$10,000 over our original goal, while
also learning what works and what
doesn’t, [and] how to plan something
like this.”
Plans are already in the works for
next year’s gala, with Anna as the
chair and Zayna stepping down to
participate more in the event’s fundraising.
What will be the same is the
mission for St. Jude, conveyed in its
name from a quote by St. Jude founder
Danny Thomas: “I’d rather have a
million people give me a dollar than
one give me a million; that way you’ve
got a million people involved.”
Anna concurred on the sentiment,
“This [gala] helped encourage other
teens to get involved in knowing they
are helping teens who probably didn’t
think they would be experiencing cancer
or these diseases. We are spreading
awareness and getting people excited
about helping treat cancer.” ª

Upon my death, won’t my children automatically inherit my
estate and if I have no children don’t my assets pass to my closest
living relatives making a Last Will and Testament or other forms
of estate planning unnecessary?
A: With or without a Last Will, in order for your assets to reach
your heirs or other beneficiaries, a probate court proceeding is
generally required to transfer your assets. An attorney must be
hired to petition the court to supervise disbursement of your
assets as directed by your Will or state law. To avoid probate you
should consider preparing a Revocable Living Trust to transfer
assets at your death.
death in young children, it is also true that this unfortunate statistic is
100 percent preventable. According to the National Institute of Health, swim
lessons reduce the risk of drowning by 88 percent.
27th Annual
Best
Mom
in Southwest
In 1992, the Southwest Orlando
Bulletin – then just a little more than
6 years old – introduced what has
become a Southwest Orlando institution
– the annual Best Mom in
Southwest contest. Now in its 27th
year, the contest is a way for residents
to express to their moms how
important they truly are.
It seems that mothers are perpetually
protecting their children
from the ills of the world, tirelessly
cooking and cleaning, and preparing
their children for adult life, all
while managing to somehow be
the kindest and gentlest women,
despite occasionally having to dole
out discipline.
Congratulations to this year’s
winners: Christian Whitney,
overall winner; Aidan Wamsley,
12-and-older winner; Maya and
Veda Srikantan, 10-11 winners;
and Abby and Emma
Jankowski, 9-younger winners;
and all of our honorable mentions.
They join a long list of past participants
who believe that their mothers
are truly the best.
OVERALL WINNER
Christian Whitney, 18
Summerlake
Best Mom: Patricia Whitney
7575 Dr. Phillips Blvd., Suite 350
Orlando, FL 32819
Raised alongside 11 siblings, she
brought six very grateful lives into
this world. She loves her three cute
grandchildren. My mother has been
through it all and has accomplished
the greatest feats of motherhood.
When her husband was deployed to
war for a year, she raised six kids all
on her own, ranging in age from a
few months to 18 years old. When
her husband said, “We’re moving to
China,” she did not hesitate, but she
prayed and said, “Let’s go.” Later,
when asked if they should go to China
a second time, she only smiled warmly.
As my father came and added a
seventh screaming child to the mix,
she showed only kindness. Almost
single-handedly, she has moved her
family 17 times across the world.
This amazing woman taught us to
cook, budget, serve and how to have
faith through all trials. Now, four of the
six children have graduated from college
debt-free. The fifth earned a fullride
scholarship. All three of her sons
are Eagle Scouts in the Boy Scouts
of America. After a certain daughter
and son-in-law came back for help
with their little family, she selflessly
gave shelter and child care, even
though she retired from toddler care
a decade ago.
While she did her best and taught
us well, we didn’t always listen.
Through the paradox of pride, we
thought we knew better. She didn’t
condemn us when we fell; rather,
she wrapped us in her perfect arms,
holding us for all time.
12-AND-OLDER WINNER
Aidan Wamsley, 18
Stoneybrook West
Best Mom: Lauryn Wamsley
I am now 18 and a senior in
high school. When my mother was
my age, her morning routine before
school consisted of waking up
on time, taking a shower, getting
dressed and then packing lunch for
me, dressing me, feeding me and
driving to a day care that would
watch me while she studied and tested
with other high school students.
It must have been difficult for my
mother. My birth father left her when
she told him she was pregnant with
me. I’ve never seen him my entire life,
and my mother never once spoke of
him. She gave up going to college just
to raise me. I’d wait up all night until 9
p.m., because I couldn’t sleep until she
came home from her job as a waitress
at a restaurant, where she’d barely
get any tips and that was a 30-minute
drive away from home. That year
I would bring peanut butter and jelly
sandwiches every day for lunch.
I think she has grown some armor
over the years. She’s now a mother of
four and has volunteered as a surrogate
mother two years in a row to give
birth for those who couldn’t. I don’t
know how she does it. I choose to
believe that her children motivate her.
After all, she is a preschool teacher.
10-11 WINNER
Maya and Veda Srikantan, 10
Westminster Landing
Best Mom: Dr. Shoba Srikantan
Our mother is the best mother in the
whole universe. She is as sweet as a
chocolate caramel and as strong as
a beating heart. As twin sisters, we
chose to write this essay together to
honor our wonderful mother.

ow and doesn’t get any sleep, she still
comes to our tennis tournaments, music
concerts and more with a smile on her
face. We do not know how she does
it, how she is so strong to persevere
through her tiredness. She is extremely
dedicated to us, and we know she will
always be there to support us and encourage
us to make the world a better
place. Mom, we love you.
Our mother is so kind and caring.
She nurtures us and teaches us many
important lifelong lessons. Without our
mom, we wouldn’t be able to believe in
ourselves. She teaches us to never give
up, to always be confident in ourselves,
and to celebrate each other’s successes.
Our mom is our superhero. She is
better than Wonder Woman, because
she is not only a great mom, she is also
a fantastic pediatrician. She saves kids’
lives every day as a critical care doctor.
picked going to Monkey Joe’s so we
could have fun, which makes her the
most happy. Mommy does not always
do her own fun things, because she
makes sure we have fun. Mommy
likes to make holidays very special.
On our birthdays, she decorates our
rooms while we sleep. She decorates
the house for holidays and sometimes
gives us surprises in our kitchen table
seat sacks. Most of all, Mommy does
Emma:
Mommy is the best mommy, because
she snuggles me at bedtime,
and that makes me feel happy. She
wakes up early before the sun to make
my lunch and writes special notes for
my lunchbox, which Mrs. Murray
reads to me. My heart is so happy
when Mommy visits my class at school
to help. When I feel sad, Mommy rubs
my feet and tummy. That makes me
feel better. She takes care of me and
takes days off of work to play with me.
That makes me feel special.
HONORABLE MENTIONS
My mom is the best, because she
designs roads and bridges for people
to go to work and school. She
is a civil engineer and a great dancer.
She comes to my school to help
Mrs. Kirchof, my pre-K 3 teacher,
with activities. I love my mommy, because
she is smart and beautiful. My
mom also sings a new song to me every
night. My mom is the best, because
everyone at school loves her. She is
also the best, because she comes to all
my soccer games and yells, “Gooo!”
when I score. My mom loves my sister,
dad, dog and neighbors. She also
loves to bring me to school. My mom
is a very good daughter and is always
helping other people.
Matias Sanchez, 5
Wingrove Estates
My mom is special to me. She always
believes in me. When I feel like
I am going to fail, she says to me,
“Sylvon, you can do anything you
put your mind to. You can do it.”
When I am scared, she backs me up
and tells me a joke. She does unbelievable
things to help me succeed in life.
Something else my mom does is
teach me how to cook. I know it’s
crazy, but in a way, she is trying to
get me ready for the world. My dad
was a chef. He owned a restaurant,
and the food looked amazing. My
mom picked up cooking from my
dad and now is teaching me.
My mom prays for me. She prays
for me to succeed in life, and she
prays for my brother. My brother had
asthma when he was little. We were
about to lose him, but luckily he made
it, and I am grateful for that. My mom
is the best. She makes my heart melt.
Sylvon Dennaoui, 10
Winter Garden
Every year on my mom’s birthday,
I write “Thank you for everything that
you do for me” on her card. While I
truly am grateful, this phrase doesn’t
begin to cover just how grateful I am.
My mother is strong. My mother is
kind. My mother is helpful. My mother
is adventurous. Most of all, my
mother is loving. I feel her love every
day — in the hug she gives me when
I’m feeling down, in the medicine and
tea she provides for me when I’m sick,
in the way she drops off my laptop at
school when I forget it at home. No
matter what it is I need, she is ready
to do everything she can to help me.
My mother is incredibly strong.
Going through a divorce after 17
years of marriage with two small and
confused children tested her strength
in the greatest time of adversity.
Through it all, my mom remained resilient.
Any questions my brother and I
had, she answered with honesty. She
made sure not to make the divorce
about us, something I will be forever
appreciative of. Although times were
hard, my mother made sure she was
our rock in the rushing chaos of our
“new normal.”
Kind, helpful, adventurous, loving,
strong. All of these traits that my
mother possesses has shaped me
into the young adult I am today.
So, even though this is not a birthday
card, thank you for everything
you do for me, Mom. I love you.
Bailey Cook, 18
Alexander Ridge
The first main reason my mom is
the best is that she is strict and hard
on me. While some might hate this,
I actually like it. It makes me do my
very best. For example, I was working
on this project for my specialgifted
class just to get it over with. It
actually wasn’t good at all. When I
am putting it away, my mom asked
me to show it to her. She took one
quick glance and told me to redo
it and take my time. She emphasized
take my time. I redid it, took
my time and gave it back to my
mom to check. She read it over and
approved. This is how my mom
being strict helped my grades.
My mom is friendly, funny and fun
(the three f’s). She can be the three
f’s everywhere, even when she’s
strict. Sometimes during the day,
she will make a joke. She’s friendly,
funny and fun when she’s using the
three f’s.
My mom is the best, especially
when she is strict and uses the
three f’s. If you were paying attention,
you would notice I said
“main” reason. That is because she
is awesome for an infinite number
of reasons.
Peter Kinakin, 10
I am blessed with an amazing, loving
mother. She is one of a kind.
Coming from a strong line of women,
my mom has taught me to be
independent. She is my role model,
superhero, best friend and inspiration.
My mom is a selfless person.
She wanted the best life for her kids,
so she moved to the United States.
Without having to tell her, my mom
knows when I am in need of a hug
or am just having a bad day. She
is always understanding and making
sure I am OK.
My mom is my best friend. There
is no one who can make me laugh
more than her. She knows how to
put a smile on my face and brighten
my days. There were times when my
volleyball tournaments took a whole
day. Most of them were in Tampa,
so she could not drive back home.
Even though she had other things to
do, she still came and supported me.
She is supportive of everything I do
and always looking for the best option.
There is nothing I would change
about her. She is perfect in my eyes
and always will be. She is irreplaceable.
My love for her is endless.
One of the reasons my mother is
the best is she puts a lot of work into
the activities that I love to do. She
supports my roller derby team, is the
leader of my Girl Scout troop, and
spends so much time on home-school
for me. She drives out of her way
to take me to places for my enjoyment,
from Tampa to Daytona and
everywhere in between. She knows
when I am sad and sometimes builds
a pretend campfire in my room with
a blanket and tea lights. We sit and
and I love that. I also love to bake,
and she supports that. She teaches
me to bake. Sometimes we take baking
classes together, and she watches
Kids Baking Championship with
me. Another reason my mother is the
best is she loves me so unconditionally,
and that warms my heart so much.
There are many reasons why I
love my mom. She is the best in
Southwest!
Allison Belemjian, 10
My mom: wonderful, beautiful,
admirable, a little crazy — but more
than that, she has the strongest faith
of anyone I know. My brother was
born with a cleft palate and had to
have many surgeries to fix it. My
mom stood by him and reminded him
that God is going to use him in unimaginable
ways. She was the glue
that held our family together when
we found out that my grandmother
passed away after being diagnosed
with cancer. My mom is someone I
count on no matter what, and I am
forever grateful for that.
My mother works hard for my family.
Not only does she put up with a
7-year-old gremlin, a crazy fourthgrade
boy, and a preteen who isn’t
very motivated to get up in the mornings,
but she makes time to love and
appreciate each of us in our own
ways. My momma loves Blaire, my
sister, for being wild and spunky,
and for the way she gets back up on
her feet and bites back stronger. My
brother, James, has been through
a lot and is loved by my mom in so
many ways, including his kind heart,
his strength to keep going on, and
the fact that he will go out of his way
to help someone or lift them up. And
I know in my heart that my mommy
loves me, because I am, and always
will be, hers — her outgoing, foodloving,
Christ-adoring child. She
loves us for who we are on the inside.
I love you, Mom. I love you most.
Brooke Larweth, 12
I love my mom. I think my mom is
super nice. Whenever I’m sick, she
takes away fun parts of her day to
take care of me. My mom pays for
my food and water. She is never
mean to me. She has to take care of
two kids — my brother and me.
My mom is helpful. When I have
a test, she says that she will help me
pass, and I usually get 100 percent.
If it wasn’t for my mom, I wouldn’t
be alive. She taught me how to walk
and talk. She takes me to places
that I’ve never been to before, and
she never does anything new with
me without asking me first. My mom
helped me when I had crutches and
when I got stung by a stingray. She
also cooks dinner for my family and
buys me books to read. She lets me
play outside whenever it’s not dark.
My mom is the best mom, and she
couldn’t be better.
somehow my mother makes it look
easy. She is a role model, not just
to her children, but to her students
as well. When she teaches, it is not
simply an academic experience. She
teaches kids to be like her by going
out of her way to help others. She
has become one of the most optimistic
people I have ever met by always
looking at situations with a smile on
her face. All her life, she has been
a hard worker, and I don’t expect a
change in that any time soon.
She is incredibly charitable, empathetic
and understanding. These
qualities and others make it easy for
her to brighten up a person’s day.
She sets an example for our generation
in many ways. She received a
complete education, and soon after,
she went back to college to get her
master’s degree. Even in her hectic
and demanding lifestyle, she still
finds time for prayer and the celebration
great role model for her family by
eating healthy and exercising. This
My mom is amazing. She is there
My mom provides food, drives me
things. The most important thing she
does for me is she keeps me safe.
My mom also does these things for
my sister and dad. She gives me love
On a rough day, my mom is there
it feels like all my troubles vanish. I
feel like I can do anything with my
my mom encourages me to be myself,
My mom does a lot for me, and if
She looks out for us no matter what
She walks into a room and lights it
that I have seen her have a problem
with anyone. She is not only a great
mom because she is a great person,
she is truly an amazing mom.
Throughout my entire life, she has
done more things for me than I can
count. From making me breakfast,
cleaning my room and buying me
any food that I want to helping me
with all of my college applications,
buying me a car, and picking out my
prom dress with me. She is always
there for me, and I know no matter
how mad I make her, she will still do
anything for me.
As I get older, a lot of things have
changed in my life, but something
that has never stopped is every time
I come home from being out with
friends, or at school or work, the
minute I step in the house, my mom
yells, “Meggyyyy!” It makes me
Next, my mom and I have so much
brownies, cookies and go on golf
cart rides. She lets me drive, and we
My mom is my closest friend, because
we go shopping together.
When I get scared at night, she lays
to the moment of my last breath, my
mom will be there for me.
I’ve learned a lot from my mom.
She’s not always breathing down my
back or getting mad when I do something
wrong. My mom encourages
me to study, stand up for myself, and
do what I feel is right — which so far
has gotten me through so much. Her
path that I follow has been leading
me to a better place.
My mother is the most hardworking
person on the planet. She is a
stay-at-home mom who is always
cleaning and taking care of my little
brother and sister. Trust me, they
are wild! At the end of the day, she
makes time for me. This is helping me
become an independent person. My
mom is Earth, and I am the moon.
She makes sure I stay in orbit.
My mother loves me for who I am.
She is the one who cares for me.
I make a lot of mistakes, but that’s
part of my personality. We don’t like
the same things, but everyone is different.
My mom is the best mom in
the universe. She makes me a better
person. The puppies of a wolf need
their mother to teach them, care for
them and love them, just like my mom
does for me.
Lily Sutherland, 10
Do you like moms? I like my mom,
because she cares about my family
and me. My mom pays bills, cleans
the house and helps me do homework.
She is special, because she
shows her love and is ready for anything.
She is a really good problemsolver.
She’s always there when I am
ill or sad. I like my mom, because she
is a hard worker and the best. She
is a good listener and is able to also
help other families by helping them
find a new home to live in. All of this
makes my mom the best of all moms.
Erich Eichner, 8
Imagine someone who works
hard to make sure others are happy,
someone who dedicates her life to
others, someone who is always a
light to others. This is a definition
of my mom. The answer to how my
mom stays this positive is coffee. But,
she also stays this positive because
of her love toward our family. My
mom is obviously the best mom in
the world, because she works hard,
loves others and is a best friend.
I am grateful that my mom works
hard to make sure I am happy. She
prepares food for my family and
does our laundry. We have four kids
in our family, so it can be crazy at
times, but she still pulls off dropping
off my older brother and I at lacrosse
(at two different places), my younger
brother at his drum lessons, and my
little sister at her dance class, all on
time. My mother is also a great role
model, always having a positive attitude,
and is very friendly. She tries
to do what is right, even in hard
times. Also, my mom is supportive
of our decisions, whether it’s sports
or birthday dinner picks. By far, my
mom is the best mom anyone could
ask for.
It’s obvious that I was gifted with
the best mom in the world. My mom
helps make my life possible, and I’m
very grateful. She will do anything to
help and support me.
cheers me up, whether she makes
to make things better.
She is so supportive of everything I
do, as long as it’s good and reasonable.
She also supports me when I
My mom is the best mom in the
world. Period. She does everything
for my family and me. She gets up in
the middle of the night, every night,
to check my sister’s blood sugar. She
doesn’t have to, but she does. My mom
gets us up and ready every weekday
morning, just for school. Whatever
you can think of, she does it no matter
what it costs her. That’s why I love
her more than anybody else in the
entire universe. She even volunteers
at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children
every Monday for five hours, because
she cares about and loves everybody.
My mother is unlike any other
mother in the world. She is the most
courageous, brave, heartwarming,
admirable woman on the planet. She
thinks before she speaks, cares more
about others than herself, and takes
blame for almost everything, even if
it isn't her fault. I have no clue what
I would do without my mom. I’m going
to give her the maximum amount
of love I can before I go off to college.
When I go to college, that will most
definitely be the hardest day of my life,
because I will have to leave my mom
and become everything she’s ever
wanted me to be. I wish I could be a
child all my life, not only because being
a child is fun, but because I would
get to be with my mom every second
of every day for the rest of my life.
Lacrosse and hemophilia are two
things that don’t belong together.
When my mom found out I was diagnosed
with a severe bleeding disorder,
she became my at-home nurse.
She learned to inject my factor VIII
into my port without legitimate training,
just trial and error. It takes a lot
of guts to do something you know will
hurt someone you love. My mother
loved her role of being a self-learned
nurse to me, and I am forever grateful
for that. When I decided I wanted
to play lacrosse, she didn’t shy away
even though she knew her job as
my mom would only get harder. She
supported me through everything.
Countless doctors said I should quit
lacrosse and give up, but my mom
www.SouthwestOrlandoBulletin.com x May 3 — 16, 2018 x 29
knew with the right treatment and
care, my bleeding could remain under
control. I am so lucky to have a
person in my life who cares this much
about me and shares my passion for
the game I love. I went on to sign with
Syracuse University to play lacrosse
with the best Division 1 lacrosse team
of all time, being the only hemophiliac
to ever play D1 lacrosse. Without
my mom, I would have given up the
game a long time ago. Because of
her, I am able to live out my dream
of playing at the highest level and
am educated on how to maintain my
bleeding disorder to stay healthy.
My mom is truly one of a kind, and
that is why I love her.
There is something special about
mothers, almost as if they are fictional
superheroes in a story, who
always know how to solve problems.
But in reality, they are 10 times better
than any superhero you can think
of. No matter if it is helping me ace
my next big test or killing the “enormous”
always ready to drop everything she
is doing to help me.
My mom is the most fearless and
hardworking person I know. She
would give up everything she has to
give me the perfect life, but little does
she know, I already live the perfect life
with her as my mom. As well as being
my mother, she is my best friend. She
She makes me laugh daily, sometimes
at the worst possible moments. But I
special memories.
hard it is to be a mom. For instance,
my mother has to take care of my sister
and me, while leaving at six in the
she manages to balance it all out,
while leaving room to be there for me
I would live without her. She gives
me the strength to finish every task
that is handed to me. And no matter
how much I struggle, I will keep
advancing, knowing she is with me
every step of the way. Although God
has blessed me with many incredible
things, what I am most thankful for is
the ability to call her my mom.
Simran Singh, 13
Summerport
My mom is the best, because she encourages
me in what I want to do and
what makes me happy. She makes
room in her life to spend time with
the family. She helps me when I am in
need of help. She cares for everyone
and helps homeless people. She loves
me, my family and God, too.
She is kind, nice and caring, and
can control her temper. She plays
with me and hugs and kisses me.
She loves going to the beach, and I
do, too. She is also grateful, friendly,
funny, hardworking, sweet, polite,
bold, beautiful and entertaining. She
knows how to cheer me up when I am
feeling down. She is my superhero.
No one can ever replace my mom.
I can depend on her and trust her.
She believes in me to get stuff done.
She knows what she’s doing, and I
trust her in that.
Zoey Ready, 9
Preston Square
Dear Mom,
You mean everything to me, and
without you, I would have no one to
cheer me up if I am sad, I probably
wouldn’t have gotten into golf, and, as
a matter of fact, I wouldn’t be here.
We share a lot of things in common
such as golf, cars, seafood, the ocean
and more. You truly love and care
about me. We value traveling very
much, especially to tropical and mountainous
places. You cheer for me at every
event I take part in, from lacrosse
games to steel drum concerts to golf
tournaments to speech competitions.
You are always there to support me.
I can remember a time when you
and I were planning on going fishing
— another one of our favorite hobbies
— but on the way, we saw a
crazy hot rod pull in to a church
parking lot. As we passed, we saw
a whole bunch of old and new exotic
cars, so we turned around. Instead
of going fishing, we visited a car
show for about two hours then went
fishing. This proves that no matter
how many kids say their moms are
the best or the funniest or the coolest,
my mom is always No. 1 in my
heart.
Tye SoSebee, 10
Orange Tree
My mom is the best mom, because
she cooks me food — breakfast,
lunch and dinner. Her food is
amazing. She takes care of me by
giving me medicine, and sometimes
she sleeps with me. She is the best
at doing arts and crafts for me. She
teaches me to love my family. She
also helps me brush my teeth, and
she lets me help her vacuum.
Andres Kovac, 5
Windermere Sound
My mother is the reason I am the
person I am today. She is the very
reason I am living and breathing.
She is the reason why I strive to be
kind, and she is the reason why I
strive to be generous. My mother
taught me how to be strong, but also
how to be gentle. She taught me how
to be brave, but she also taught me
to be careful. She taught me to be
honest, but also to use discretion. She
showed me the wonders that life can
offer, but that life is not always fair.
My mother taught me that nothing in
life will be handed to you on a silver
platter, so if you want something you
must work for it. And not only did my
mother love me and care for me, she
also taught me discipline and how to
distinguish between right and wrong.
Throughout my entire childhood
she has given me all of the love,
comfort, advice, stability and, most
of all, support I needed to be successful
in my life. Whenever I went
to her for advice, she was there.
Whenever I needed help, she was
there. Whenever I made a mistake,
she was there to tell me that she
makes mistakes, too, it’s part of being
human, and what we do about
our mistakes is what matters.
My mother has given me everything
I could ever need from her, and
I can only hope to be a mother like
her someday.
Kate Lewe, 17
Phillips Landing
A mom is one who is always there
for you, supports you and advocates
for you. My mom is the best, because
she knows and cares about my feelings,
and she is there for me.
My mom knows my feelings, especially
when I am sad or something
is wrong. For example, recently she
noticed that I was not myself. She
asked me if something was wrong.
I said that I was stressed with all my
schoolwork and tests. She knew just
what to say to help me through all
my stress. Another example is how
every day after school, she asks me
how my day went. She makes sure
that if I come home sad nothing happened
between me and my friends.
Clearly, my mom knows me like I
know myself, and she cares.
Furthermore, my mom is there for me
no matter what she is going through.
When I need help with homework,
she immediately stops what she’s doing
and helps me. One time, when
she cut her finger on glass, she was
hurting badly. She still made sure I
was tucked in bed and falling asleep.
Even when she was on an important
phone call, she made sure I was OK.
She prepared a snack for me and got
me started on homework while still
handling the phone call. Obviously,
my mom never leaves me hanging.
All in all, my mom is the best, because
she knows my feelings and is
always there for me no matter what
she is going through. My mom may
not be famous like Beyoncé or Taylor
Swift, but these things make her the
best mom I could ask for.
Aliza Britton, 11
Windsor Landing
I think my mom is special, because
she is a special doctor who helps
people when they are sick. I love
her, because she gave me a heart
necklace for Valentine’s Day, and
she helps me with arts and crafts.
My mom is the best. She gives me
her phone, so I can play games on it.
She hugs me, squeezes me and kisses
me. She helps me with things that
are a little hard, like opening boxes
and homework. I love my mom, because
she loves me very much.
Rebekka Napartovich, 6
Waterford Pointe
Gentle and warm is my mother’s
hug. Sweet and kind are the words
that effortlessly roll off her tongue.
Loving and caring is her touch in everything
she does. All of these things
are wrapped up in my mother’s love.
My mom is always the first to ask me
what’s wrong and always the first
to lend me a hand. She does all of
these things without a second thought
and with her compassionate love that
is never-ending. Whenever I need a
hug, she runs to me with open arms,
hugs me tightly and tells me how much
she loves me. There has never been
a day when she hasn’t gotten out of
bed and started her day early to take
care of the entire family. Never has
she hesitated to take care of my sisters
and me.
My mother is a strong woman who
has taught her daughters to stand tall
and work hard. She has taught me to
strive for everything and to not settle
until I am at my best. She has taught
me that there will be hardships, and
that she has them, too, but to keep
my head held high and to let nothing
stop me. My mom has always been
a leader who leads her children
on the right path to success, and
when we fall, she picks us up before
herself. All I aspire to be is to be as
great as her.
Maia Engilis, 7
MetroWest
My mom is the best mom ever. She
is kind, generous and loving, which
are just a few reasons why she is the
best in Southwest.
My mom is the best, because she
helps not only me, but she also helps
my dad and her patients. She takes
time to help me with my homework
when I am stuck on a problem. She
helps me clean my portion of the
house, and she helps me feel confident
in myself. She takes me to track
practice and to tumbling and trampoline
practice almost every day of the
week. She is so dedicated to helping
me pursue my interests that she recently
suffered through food poisoning
to cheer me on at a competition.
My mom helps my dad make dinner,
when he makes it; and she supports
my dad being in the Army. He is
constantly going away to drill, PT or
every few years, deploying.
My mom is a nurse, so she helps
her patients at work by giving them
medications and helping them to
stay healthy. She also cares about
the environment. When we go out on
our boat, if there is trash anywhere,
my mom grabs it up, so that the animals
will not be harmed by the trash.
As you can see, my mom is the
best mom in Southwest. She is helpful
and caring to those around her.
So, when you think about the best
mom in Southwest, please remember
my mom, Carolyn Knopfle, because
she is the best!
Emily Knopfle, 10
Meadow Ridge
My mom is very important to me.
She always is by my side, supporting
everything I do. Even if she has to
work so much for her job, she is there
for me. Usually, for the Disney races,
she works extra time, but she always
sends me pictures of fun things she
sees while working. Even though she
works often, I can count on her to be
there for me no matter what.
My mom has done so much for me
throughout the years. She puts notes
in my lunch that I read every day.
One note that she gave me said,
“Good luck on the Idaho tests,” because
we have an inside joke that
she forgot the name of the Iowa test.
She also comes up with little jingles
that she sings in the mornings. My
favorites are “Nobody Has Gym on
Friday” and “Sweater Pants Make
Me Dance.” My mom is so funny. In
fact, she is kind of like the comic relief
in our family. Whenever someone
in my family is feeling down, she is
the one to cheer them up by making
them laugh.
In my opinion, my mom is the glue
that keeps my family together. She
makes us laugh at the dinner table and,
on the way home from school, asks me
how my day was. I am so thankful for
her, and I feel lucky to have such an
amazing mom by my side.
At the risk of sounding cliché, my
mother is the person whom I admire
the most — ever. My father was killed
in a drunk-driving accident when I
was 3, and my mother never remarried.
All of my childhood memories
were of our only-child, single-parent
family. There was only she and I,
yet I never felt shortchanged. As a
child, she raised me with morals,
values and experiences that have
guided me effortlessly on my journey
through life. As an adult, she has become
both more than a mother and
more than a friend simultaneously.
Please do not think that I believe
she can do no wrong. My mom is not
always perfect and has never hidden
that from me. When she made
a mistake, she apologized and tried
not to do it again. In doing so, she
taught me about the difference between
pride and arrogance, humility,
responsibility for your actions,
and the ability to be willing to grow
as a person. These lessons are some
of the many gifts she gave me.
My mother is the best mother
that any being could hope to have.
Regardless of whether you concur or
not, I know that no one could have a
mother who has believed in their kid
and supported them more than my
mom has me. She won the best mom
contest for me the minute I was born.
There is no other.
Nicole Lupo, adult
Ocoee
Why my mother’s the best? Well,
let’s put her deeds to the test! She
cooks, she cleans, she buys me a
costume for Halloween. When I cry,
she looks over me with her loving
eye. Yes, I guess she can yell and be
mean, but she’s no machine. Maybe
she makes me eat food that I don’t
want to, but it’s good to try something
that’s new. She’s sometimes late, but I
don’t mind the wait. She might be so
tired that she could fall asleep, but for
me, she would battle sheep. She gets
me all the latest games, mixing up my
sister’s and my names. From needs to
wants, listening to her taunts, I know
she means well. She doesn’t have to
tell. Sometimes funny, really liking
bunnies. Taking care of my health,
always there whether it be for my
skin or my hair. Always teaching me
things that are new, everything I owe
to you. My mom is the best, no matter
how much you protest. I love her
a lot, and this can only be her spot!
Saki Anandani, 10
Kensington Park
My mom is the best, because she
lets me play tea party with her. She
plays outside. She loves it when I
dress up in a costume, especially my
dragon costume. I love our bedtime
snuggles.
Saverio Cranford, 4
Lakes of Windermere
I think my mom is the best, because
she is patient and respectful.
Also, whenever I have a school project,
my mom helps me with my drafts
(paragraphs) and what to put inside
and outside of it. Once, when I was
sick, and I started feeling a bit better,
she took me to Disneyland. When I
have field trips, she always asks me if
I want her to chaperone. Whenever
Dad goes on work trips, she lets us
sleep turns with her, and we watch
a movie and go to Chick-fil-A. She
keeps us happy, and sometimes we
go on surprise trips to Argentina to
visit family. Every weekend I get to
have a play date with my friends.
My mom always likes teaching me
things for when I am nervous, and it
helps. That is why I think my mom is
the best.
Emma Sanabria, 9
North Bay
My mom is terrific. First, she cooks
spaghetti for me. Second, she helps
me with my homework. Third, she
jumps rope with me. Last, she collects
seashells with me. Now you know all
the reasons my mom is special.
Lovely Aquart-Durieux, 7
Windhover
Out of the 24 hours that the Earth
spins on its axis each day, every

single moment, my mom spends
thinking of my sister and me. She
has made countless sacrifices for us,
from leaving her whole life to come
to America seeking a better life for
her children, to traveling back and
forth between three countries, working
to provide for our family. Though
I may not spend every minute with
my mom, we truly have the strongest
connection a mother and daughter
can have, as she constantly
knows how I feel before the words
expressing my state of mind leave
my mouth.
“Role model” does not begin to
describe what my mom means to
me. She is my most prominent inspiration
and supporter in everything I
do. When I am not my most confident,
my mom is there to pick me up
and push me to do my absolute best.
She is the most hardworking, caring
and devoted mother in the world.
My mom has the biggest heart, and I
am so grateful to be under her care,
having been blessed with her undying
love for me. She never fails to
show how much I mean to her and
always reminds me by saying, “No
matter what, I will always love you.”
Lisette Alvaro, 14
Belmere
There is no doubt in my mind that
my mom is the best in Southwest.
She is there when I need her, offering
good advice and support. When
a problem comes about, I know I can
turn to my mom for help.
One of the things I love most about
my mom is the time we get to spend
together driving to and from events.
I do not know how she takes care of
my two siblings and me, but she does
an awesome job juggling it all. My
mom also does an amazing job of
providing me with all the necessary
tools for school and play. Therefore,
my mom is the best in Southwest.
much stuff like toys, decorating and
other things.
My mom’s favorite color is red. She
loves to surprise me, and if a baby sitter
comes, I will never forget about my
mom. She takes me places and to many
stores. In conclusion, I love my mom.
Adam Arafat, 8
Gotha
My mom is the best mom ever due
to her generosity, care, love and support.
I appreciate everything that my
mom has sacrificed for me. She goes
to work every day, and she brought
me to Holy Family Catholic School to
have an amazing religious education.
My mom will do anything and everything
to make me happy. She always
tells me there aren’t any words to
express the love that she has for me.
Each day, I learn to appreciate more
and more all my mom has done for
me. My mom is supportive and will
always be by my side. Even when I’m
down, she never fails to cheer me up.
Stephanie Younes, 11
Heroes are normally portrayed
as superhumans with unimaginable
abilities. However, this is not always
the case. A mother may not be the
first example that comes to mind
when you hear the word “hero,” but
if you truly dig deep into your heart
and soul, you will discover that I am
right. The protection, love and kindness
of a nurturing mother triumphs
over all the evils in the world.
My mother does not fall short of
this definition. She has been guiding
and caring for me from the
second I entered this world. She is
my role model, the person I look up
to the most. My mom is my inspiration.
She started and still owns a
successful business. She has won
tremendous awards and gained
recognition from her success. Even
with her busy schedule and long
hours, my mom finds time to be my
personal chauffeur, therapist and
best friend. She drives me to my
plethora of extracurriculars, and
she is there for me no matter what.
My mother is the person I can tell
I am feeling down, it is she who is
“my mom.”
Meredith O’Malley, 14
I love my mom, because she is
nice. She gave birth to me and takes
She drives me to soccer practice and
me, and it makes me feel comforted.
She takes me to cool places for my
me. When I am scared, she comforts
love her very much.
One time when we were making
leprechaun traps, I burned myself
with a hot glue gun, and I got two
big blisters. My mom comforted me
and said, “It is OK,” and brought
me an ice pack. I love my mom very
much.
Lilly Anderson, 9
My mom is sweet. First, my mom
reads at nighttime to me. My mom
helps me with homework. She cares
for me. When I am sick, my mom
makes soup for me. This is why my
mom is special.
Henrique Benitez, 7
My mother is not only my role model,
but she’s my best friend. Her perseverance
inspires me to work hard
each day, and her kindness and
generosity show me that no matter
the circumstances, you must put others
first. Whenever I need someone
to talk to, a hand to hold, or a shoulder
to cry on, my mom is always by
my side. Each day, her positive attitude
reminds me that we need to
count our blessings and always be
thankful for what we have.
In 2007, my mother needed
to leave her whole life behind in
New Jersey and move to Florida
for my father’s job. Now, many
years later, my mom not only has
a full-time job in the medical field,
but she runs marathons yearly for
charity. Through all of this, she still
makes time to take care of our family.
Each year, my family celebrates
St. Patrick’s Day, my mom’s favorite
holiday, with those we love. One
of our favorite things to do is to try
and find a four-leaf clover, a token
of good luck. Now I have finally
realized my four-leaf clover was
right in front of me all along — my
mom.
Marion Mongello, 14
My mom is the best, because she
helps other people. She is a nurse, and
she cares for everyone. She is honest
and smart. She is pretty and creative.
She is loving and hardworking. She
helps clean and organize the house.
She is one of a kind. She is funny and
thoughtful. She makes me and my brother
food when we are hungry. My mom
is careful with things and active. She
also is intelligent and friendly to others.
My mom is successful with a lot of
things. My mom is talented and fun. She
cheers up people when they are sad.
My mom is proud of me and my
brother, because we try our best in
school and help her. My mom is the
best. She is not rude or mean. She is
nice and sweet. She makes me and
my family laugh.
Our mom is awesome. She has
time to play with us and has time
to keep the house clean and take
care of us. Our mom also works to
get money for our family, so we can
have a healthy and holy life. We
also love our mom very much.
Madison Suarez, 4
My mom is the best in Southwest,
because she makes me feel better
when I feel bad about myself. She
takes care of me like no one else.
She gets out of her bed quickly and
comes to get me if I have a bad
dream. If something is wrong, she
always tells me what it is.
My mom defends me if somebody
yells at me or is mean. No one loves
me more than her. For Mother’s Day,
she gives me breakfast in bed, and
it is always delicious. When she gets
mad at me, when she is done, she tells
me how much she loves me. So when
she gets mad, she still loves me a lot.
My mom would never make me
do something I don’t want to do. My
mom supports me in everything. She
never gives up on me. She always
makes time for me.
Viewers of the popular Bravo reality
15 finale. One loyal viewer was
Susan Tentler, whose daughter,
Adrienne Cheatham, had successfully
made it as one of the final
two contestants. Ultimately, the title of
“Top Chef” was awarded to Joseph
Flamm. Making it all the way to
runner-up is a major accomplishment,
bringing well-deserved praise and accolades
to Adrienne that her mother
says Adrienne will no doubt use to
Susan, a resident of Vizcaya,
“Adrienne was very poised, determined
“I was most impressed by Adrienne
she said the judges picked the right
person. She was so gracious, even
Even as a child growing up in
