PUB CHOIR FAN BASE CONTINUES TO GROW
QHA REVIEW | 14
A little while back in the QHA Review we introduced
you to the notion of pub choirs. It basically involves
uniting a group of people to sing in harmony as one in
a pub. Well the phenomenon has taken off. Pub Choir,
which is said to be “the original” and brainchild of
founder Astrid Jorgenson has taken things to a whole
new level.
The first event in Brisbane on a year ago drew about
80 people and each subsequent event has grown in
popularity to the point where organisers now need to at
times turn people away.
The movement’s first event outside
of Brisbane was recently held on the
Sunshine Coast and attracted over
300 people. Now the concept looks
set to expand beyond South-East
Queensland with dates locked in
for Hobart and discussions being
held for an event in Melbourne.
Astrid said the response from the
Sunshine Coast proved the concept
could be taken further afield. “It’s a
unique thing that we’ve got going on
and I think it really suits Australian
culture.”
As explained on the web page Pub Choir entails
packing yourself “into a pub with hundreds of
strangers, learn a song in three-part harmony in 90
minutes, perform it twice, and if the publishing Gods
are smiling: have it immortalised in video forever. No
audition, no solos, no commitments, no sheet music,
no worries.
“Music belongs to everybody. So, grab a beer, relax,
and simply open your sound hole (your mouth, FYI). It’s
rowdy, wholesome, and so much damn fun.”
The Pub Choir team – including
musicians, photographer and emcee
– gives itself just under two hours to
teach a popular song to hundreds of
wannabe singers.
Pub Choir also featured at the recent
Women in Hotels event where the
crowd joined in their own version of
a Pub Choir with a rendition of the
classic song, Hey Jude.
