sent? We would have said to
ourselves, hmmm….God gave
Adam and Eve, the first man and
woman a command and they did
not follow it. They reasoned that
it was okay to disobey him and
they received no punishment, no
discipline. That would mean that
although the Lord gave us commandments
through the Bible,
and gives us commandments
through his Holy Spirit, that we
do not have to listen. That it is
perfectly okay as long as we
have good reasons to disobey
him. If we have good reasons to
disobey him, then we will be fine.
Imagine a world founded on that
principle. God gives us rules
and has expectations of our behavior
and we read it or hear it.
We acknowledge it, and then
reason whether or not that is the
right thing for us. What would be
the point of Him giving us commands
at all? Imagine raising
your children that way? Telling
them what is right and what is
wrong but ultimately giving them
the final say with no consequences.
For instance, you tell your
child, you should go to school
and do your best but ultimately
it’s up to you. How many elementary
school drop outs would
we have? At such a young age,
they would not even understand
their eyes will be opened and
will be as gods, knowing good
and evil. Eve then reasons. You
see the Lord already told her
what was right, that they should
not eat of that tree. He doesn’t
have to give her a reason. The
point is that he said it, and she
was to be obedient. But she reasoned.
In verse 6 she sees that
it is good for food, it is pleasant
to her eyes, and she wanted to
be wise, so she ate it and gave it
to her husband to eat. And even
though they tried to explain their
reasoning and place the blame
elsewhere they were still disciplined
for being disobedient.
Now imagine if they had not
been disciplined. What kind
of message would that have
