Let "Kind of Blue"
entertain you
In the Bell Woodham Ferrers
on Monday 30th July 8.30-11 pm.
Are you bored with life now that the "World cup" and
"Wimbledon" are over?
Do you sit at home on these bright summer evenings with
nothing to do, because you have nowhere to go that's
interesting and different?
If the above describes you, well we may have just the remedy
to cheer you up.
"Kind of Blue", a local modern jazz quintet, will be playing a
mixture of jazz "classics" and songs from the "Great American
songbook".
Let these joyous melodies, (uniquely arranged by the band)
inspire you into thinking that life is worth living after all.
You'll find a friendly atmosphere in the pub, and entry and
sandwiches are free.
So why not give it a go, and board the 36 bus to Woodham
Ferrers on the 30th, you never know, you may like it so much
that you'll become a regular.
Crouch Valley U3A
Monthly Meeting
Our meeting for July will take place on Tuesday 24th in the
Multi-Purpose Room at Champions Manor Hall, Hullbridge
Road at 2pm.
Crouch Valley U3A is based in South Woodham Ferrers and
exists to provide a range of challenging and learning
activities for retired and semi-retired people in our town.
Our meetings are friendly and informal and are normally
held on the afternoon of the fourth Tuesday of each month.
If you would like to participate in one of our groups then
come along to our meeting to meet our coordinators who
will tell you all about the activities available. Or if you just
want to meet new
friends and keep active then the U3A is the best place to
start. Why not give us a visit; we may have just what you are
looking for.
Visitors to our meetings are made very welcome and we are
also happy to welcome new members into our U3A. We
have over 18 thriving interest groups, BUT WE ARE ALWAYS
LOOKING FOR NEW IDEAS AND TALENT, so if you have a
particular interest or skill that you would be happy to pass
onto others we would love to hear from you. We welcome
suggestions for new groups from our members not catered
for by our existing groups. We would be delighted to offer
the opportunity and help to set up new challenging
activities The speaker at this month’s meeting will be
Samantha Davis from The Dog’s Trust.
The newly appointed Deputy Town Mayor Councillor Kevin
Golding kindly opened our Art Trail ‘Collingwood Bay’.
The school’s Breakfast Club wanted an Art Trail that would
inspire the children and remind them of their time at the beach.
The Art Trail has a beach scene, [which the children painted on
the back of the P.E. shed] a boat full a flowers, a cave, a sail with
seats underneath and a pathway which leads to our Willow
Dome. Well done to all children involved.
Learn how to grow beautiful Fuchsias including taking cuttings
and overall general care of your plants throughout the year.
For the first time this year BHN are sponsoring the 50th Annual
Fuchsia Show, a date to definitely put in your diaries for July and
the plan is that this will be a regular event held at BHN every
year.
The Club meets the first Thursday of each month at Basildon
United Reform Church Hal, Honeypot Lane, Basildon SS14 2JZ
The Fuchsia Fellowship was formed in 1968 following a meeting
between two men who both had an interest in growing and
showing Fuchsias, so they decided to create a new society. The
club is fortunate to have one of these men, Ray Saunders, as a
member and also their current President.
The first meeting was held at the Halfway House Tea Room and
70 people attended that meeting. From those 70 people a
committee was formed and the South East Essex Fuchsia
Fellowship was born.
Over the past years the Fellowship have used several locations
for both meetings and annual shows. Shows were held at
Markhams Chase Leisure Centre and recently at the James
Hornby School, Basildon. The Fellowship is now starting a new
venture by moving the annual show to Buckhatch Nursery and
Garden Centre who are supporting and helping us in this new
episode of the Fellowship’s history.
Apart for one other society the Fellowship is one of the longest
established societies and is celebrating its 50th year in existence.
Over the past years the Fellowship has produced many fine
growers. All existing members carry on the ideals and standards
that has been carried on from the past growers and members,
who formed and created the basis of how the Fellowship is
If all that makes you feel thirsty and hungry, our cafe supplies
delicious food and drinks, including gluten free cakes!
Come and have a look around our garden centre, a relaxing way
to shop for all your gardening needs.
Buckhatch Nursery and Garden Centre is open
vintage fair caMe to creSSing teMple for helen rollaSon charity
Over 2,500 vintage and retro lovers rolled back the years and
dressed to impress for Vintage Fair on Sunday 8th July, raising
over £13,000 for Helen Rollason Cancer Charity!
In its ninth year, the annual charity event was held at Cressing
Temple Barns near Braintree and showcased a myriad of vintage
stalls including pop up hair and beauty parlour, kitchenalia,
fashion, jewellery, pre-loved furniture and more. Over 130 classic
cars and motorbikes were on display including vehicles from the
Austin 7 Club, classic Fords and Minis, American cars as well as
Harley Davidsons, Volkswagens, Messerschmitts and members of
the Rochford Hundred Vintage Tractor & Engine Club with their
stationary engines. Live music was provided by rock’n’roll band
Kingsmen who played their vintage instruments from the fifties,
and dancing from LJ’s Jive School.
Other delicious food options such as pizzas, a hog roast, gourmet
hot dogs, waffles and fudge were also on offer.
The fair has been a great success and looks set to have raised
over £13,000, which will go towards supporting those affected
by cancer in Essex, London and Hertfordshire. We are a local
charity, serving our local community, and every penny raised at
this event will go towards ensuring we continue to provide the
best possible cancer support care now and in the future.
We would like to thank Cressing Temple Barns for again hosting
our event, all of our visitors, stall holders and of course our
supporters for making it such a fantastic event!”
Helen Rollason Cancer
Charity Fundraising Manager
Kate Alden said:
“It was fantastic to see so
many people coming along to
the Vintage Fair to enjoy
themselves while supporting
our charity. There were lots of
opportunities for shopping
with a selection of stalls
selling vintage fashion, crafts,
jewellery, kitchenalia, furniture and collectables. Plenty of
refreshments were available, including Molly Moo’s Ices and a
VW Camper van bar offering a range of alcoholic beverages.
SECOND WAVE OF EARLY BIRD
DISCOUNTS FOR GET IN! SUMMER FUN
WITH CHELMSFORD CITY COUNCIL
SECOND WAVE OF EARLY BIRD DISCOUNTS FOR GET IN! SUMMER FUN WITH
CHELMSFORD CITY COUNCIL
The school summer holidays will soon be here and parents will be looking for
childcare, or something fun for their children to do over the long summer break.
Help is at hand from Chelmsford City Council, which has a range of Get In! Skills
Clinic and Active Fun sessions that will ensure there's never a dull moment, and that
children will have fun, be active and learn new skills. The first wave of early-bird
discounts for the first two weeks of the school holiday has now closed, but
parents/carers have until 24 July for early bird discounts on bookings for weeks three
and four of the holidays - weeks commencing 6 and 13 August.
Councillor Julia Jeapes, Cabinet Member for Leisure is proud of Chelmsford City
Council's commitment to leisure and their support to keeping the community fit and
active. She says: "Once again our leisure team has devised some really interesting and fun-packed sessions for youngsters to
keep them fit and active over the long summer holidays. Our Get In! activities are also ideal for busy working parents looking
for fun and friendly childcare options."
Get In! Skills Clinics are intensive, short courses designed to give children a solid foundation in a chosen sport at a choice of
locations in and around the city: Riverside Ice & Leisure Centre, Dovedale Sports Centre, Chelmsford Sports & Athletics Centre
and South Woodham Ferrers Leisure Centre. Between the hours of 9am and 5pm, parents can leave their children in the care
of friendly, qualified staff and coaches for a jam-packed half or full day of indoor and outdoor activities from Monday 23
July - Monday 3 September. Activities are dependent upon venue but include swimming, archery, athletics, cycling, football,
horse riding, and trampolining to name but a few. Children will have the opportunity to make new friends, have fun, as well
as learning some life-long sporting skills. There's also an option for children to arrive early (8am) or be picked up late (6pm).
The Get In! Skills Clinics are available for children aged between 3 and 15 (depending on the activity). Early-bird discounts
are available and are staggered with the weeks of the summer holiday. Half-day clinics are £15 (£12.50 early-bird) and £30
(£25 early-bird) for whole-day clinics. Early To discover more, visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/getin or call 01245 606707.
Chelmsford City Council will also be offering a wide range of Get In! Active Fun sessions for kids aged 3-16. The activities on
offer include athletics, canoeing, climbing, drama and dance, as well as new sessions such as obstacle inflatables, Bricks 4 Kidz
Robotics workshop and the Detective Project. The sessions range from one to five hours and start at £4.50 (depending on
the activity). To find out more visit www.chelmsford.gov.uk/getin
FOCUS ON HEALTH
South 12 Woodham
South Woodham Focus
EDITING HUMAN EMBRYOS IS OK ….. so long as it's done for
good reasons rather than simply because you want a 'designer
baby.' The official press release says: "An independent inquiry by
the Nuffield Council on Bioethics has concluded that editing the
DNA of a human embryo, sperm, or egg to influence the
characteristics of a future person (‘heritable genome editing’)
could be morally permissible. If that is to happen, a number of
measures would need to be put in place first to ensure that
genome editing proceeds in ways that are ethically acceptable."
The Nuffield Council says that technique of genome editing –
"the deliberate alteration of a targeted DNA sequence in a living
cell – could theoretically be used in assisted reproduction to alter
the DNA of a human embryo, before it is transferred to the
womb. This is not currently lawful in the UK, but could, in time,
become available as an option for parents who wish to influence
the genetic characteristics of their future child (for example, to
exclude a heritable disease or a predisposition to cancer in later
life). The Council says that the possibilities raised by this radical
new approach to reproductive choices could have significant
implications for individuals and for all of society, and there must
be action now to support public debate and to put in place
appropriate governance."
DIABETES AND CANCER. The World Heath Organisation (WHO)
divides the complications of diabetes into two groups:
microvascular (due to damage to small blood vessels) and
macrovascular (due to damage to larger blood vessels).
Microvascular complications include damage to the eyes
(retinopathy) leading to blindness, to kidneys (nephropathy)
leading to renal failure, and to nerves (neuropathy) leading to
impotence and diabetic foot disorders (which include severe
infections which may lead to amputation).
Macrovascular complications include cardiovascular diseases such
as heart attacks, strokes and insufficiency in blood flow to the
legs. A spokesman for The World Health Organisation, Dr WHO,
said: "There is evidence from large randomized-controlled trials
that good metabolic control in both type 1 and 2 diabetes can
delay the onset and progression of these complications."
These risks are well known to everybody except those at most
risk ... seemingly because they have developed the ability to blot
it out and because their friends and family have given up
nagging them.
"Did any of us in our wildest dreams ever think we'd live long
enough to see the end of the DFS sale?" Ken Dodd
To the above list we can now add another - diabetes seemingly
increases the risk of cancer. Diabetes is a risk factor for all-site
cancer for both men and women, but the increased risk is higher
in women than in men, according to a new article in
Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the
Study of Diabetes).
The journal reminds us that "cancer is the second leading cause
of death in the world. It is estimated that 1 in 4 women and 1 in
3 men develop cancer during their lifetime. In 2015 there were
17.5 million incident cancer cases and 8.7 million cancer deaths
globally, and these figures are expected to increase in the next
decades. Diabetes prevalence has also grown rapidly: 415 million
adults were reported to have the condition in 2015, with 5
million deaths attributed. In the same year 12% of global health
expenditure was spent on diabetes and its complications."
Diabetes has been associated with the risk of all-site, and some
site-specific, cancers in several systematic reviews and metaanalyses.
"Previously, however, there has been no systematic
overview of the evidence available that sex differences may
impact on this risk. This study (conducted by the University of
New South Wales, Sydney, Australia and the University of
Oxford, Oxford, UK) assessed whether there are sex differences
in the association between diabetes and cancer. It confirms that
diabetes is indeed a risk factor for all-site cancer in both sexes,
but shows also that the effect is stronger in women than in men,
and that this increase in risk for women varies with cancer site.
The authors stress "the importance of a sex-specific approach to
quantification of the role of diabetes in cancer research,
prevention and treatment," and concludes that (as you'll have
guessed) "further studies are needed to clarify the mechanisms
underlying the sex differences in the diabetes-cancer
association."
SUMMER RISKS. As soon as we get a bit of sunshine and warm
weather the killjoys want to spoil it all. The BBC warns that
"Potentially toxic algae are blooming in rivers and lochs during
Scotland's long, hot summer. Blue-green algae, which poses a
health risk to humans and animals, has flourished during the
warm spell ... and, following death of two dogs "scientists are
urging people to record sightings of the algae in a bid to speed
up response times."In the past we've had these algae down
south too so keep a look out.
The biggest risk though at present is the sun. Here in the UK we
tend to think that our brand of sunshine is safe - perhaps
because we see so little of it for so much of the time. This year
(in case you haven't noticed) it's different. Children's skin is
particularly vulnerable so do keep them safe! This may mean
keeping them out of the sun - or covering them up (long sleeves etc.)
As for sun creams, Sunsense.com tells us that: " “The SPF [sun
protection factor] of a sunscreen is derived by taking the time it
takes you to burn with a sunscreen and dividing it by the time
taken for you to burn without a sunscreen. For example if you
burn in 300 minutes with a sunscreen and 10 minutes without a
sunscreen, this is 300/10 = 30."
Whilst there are benefits from sensible sun exposure we are all,
irrespective of age, at risk of skin cancer ... even those who have
passed the first flush of youth. Lynne Hyland writes in the Mirror:
"We’re meant to get wiser as we get older, but when it comes to
SPF, we seem to have a bad case of sun blindness. Over-55s are
officially the UK’s worst at applying sun cream, with alarming
new Mintel research showing 43% didn’t use SPF even ONCE in
the past year." She quotes Dr Jonquille Chantrey: "A lot of
people think, 'Well, the damage has been done, it’s futile to start
using SPF now.' However sun damage isn’t a finite thing. Keep
adding to it and you risk tipping your immune system past the
point where it can’t repair mutations any more, leading to skin
cancer." (And in the meantime, you’re making yourself look
older, faster.)"
As I've mentioned here before, the definitive guide to sun
exposure comes, not from a medic, but rather from Noël Coward
whose song: "Mad Dogs and Englishmen" should be displayed
on large placards throughout the summer on every beach in the
land:
In tropical climes there are certain times of day
When all the citizens retire
To tear their clothes off and perspire
It's one of those rules that the greatest fools obey
Because the sun is much too sultry
And one must avoid its ultry-violet ray
The natives grieve when the white men leave their huts,
Because they're obviously ... definitely ... nuts!
chelMSford'S parkS
On 27 July, families will be able to enjoy free fun in Central Park,
Chelmsford, as part of Love Parks Week - and vote on the new
Central Park playground.
As part of this year's celebrations, Chelmsford City Council is
offering a selection of free activities on Friday 27 July, 10am-2pm.
There's no need to book: just turn up and join in at the garden
area outside the Cake at the Lake cafe in Central Park.
There will be lots of family-friendly things to do and a chance to
let your city know what you love about Chelmsford's parks. Bring
a picnic and take part in free activities for children such as badge
making, table tennis, a recycling art project, pebble painting,
designing your own park, wildlife activities and more!
This is also your chance to see the newly improved Bell Meadow
which is being officially opened by Mayor of Chelmsford,
Councillor Yvonne Spence, at approximately 10.00am by the war
memorial, with a walk through to all the fun of the event after
the proceedings.
Excitingly, there will also be the chance to vote for your favourite
design for Central Park's play area. The current play equipment
has been much-loved by children through the decades and is
now in need of a spruce up – the current multi-play unit was
installed in 2007 and swings date back to 2004.
Chelmsford City Council is now planning a full revamp of the
playground and has shortlisted three designs to go to the public
vote. Children can vote too, so bring the whole family along to
have a say!
The Light
IS LIFE GOOD FOR YOU AND HOW DO YOU MEASURE
HOW GOOD?
The people around you – your family, friends, maybe work colleagues, the neighbours;
all these people and our interaction with them can affect your mood. We accept that
some days are better than others, certainly when the sun is out for some this brightens
them up.
However, we need to look within ourselves at how we feel inside – this part of ourselves isn’t always apparent to others, such
as the company we mentioned. So, what satisfies you as an individual when you look in the mirror.
Our appearance to others – image, look can dominate our thoughts. This is where we can seek to improve/ change the way we
look – treating ourselves with clothing, gadgets, a new car; but are we happy with a satisfied feeling, and is there are beneficial
change within us? Others may not see it, but it is important to us. What about reaching out for a joyful feeling, a rewarding
feeling – this is the best of me!
Be shaped not by what you have, but how you live. We know when we feel the greatest rewards – supporting each other, maybe
those who are finding life difficult. “Give or receive” – we know that the giving gives back. We are seeking an inner joy, for that’s
the person we live with all day long, all our lives. When we reflect on people we know around us that appear to have it all, I
really hope they do - only they would know: to work diligently all your working life and provide for your self and family is a good
thing.
A Christian evangelist said, “Live simply so others can simply live”. We need to acknowledge that we are part of a worldwide
community, where some of us have grown up in vastly different circumstances. Your life may acknowledge this and reflect itself
in some of the ways we live day to day – what we buy, what we give in time to each other as well as money. The former is, quite
often, the most valuable gift.
How does life change through Jesus – we shine through living as he did in this world. He served, he gave a gift of new life to us
all through His death and resurrection.
I said I would keep you up to date with the garden where Alex
lives. We have found a new provider to take over from SCOPE.
We’ve had the paths renewed, bought a greenhouse and shed
and had a good tidy up. Thanks from Alex and his friends,
Morley Road in Tiptree. Myself and Alan I know, will be looking
down and saying that too.
volunteerS needed for
chelMSford Marathon
Runners from across the UK will be heading to Chelmsford on
Sunday 21st October to take part in the 2018 Chelmsford
Marathon. It is the fifth year of this major sporting event and
organisers at The J’s Hospice are appealing for more volunteers
to help make it even bigger!
The Chelmsford Marathon raises tens of thousands of pounds
each year for The J’s Hospice charity which cares for young adults
with life-limiting conditions and their families across Essex, in the
comfort of their own homes or in the community.
It would not be so successful without the 260 volunteers who
kindly give their time to help in the run up to the event and on
the big day.
The charity needs people to help set up and take down the event
plus there are a variety of roles throughout the day including
water station volunteers, marshals and photographers along the
route as well as baggage, t-shirt and finish funnel volunteers in
the event village at Central Park. There really is a role for
everyone!
Jane Cox has volunteered as Head Marshal at the Chelmsford
Marathon since it began. She explained: “I organise a team of
marshals by placing them in their positions, supporting them
when required and generally communicating to them the
importance of their role because without them the Marathon
would not be able to run. I encourage people to volunteer at the
Marathon because there’s a great atmosphere and you get to be
part of a big community event which is raising money for The J’s
Hospice which is a fantastic cause to support!”
To volunteer, please contact Lucy:
lucy.burgess@thejshospice.org.uk or 01245 475474.
To take part in the Chelmsford Marathon or watch a video of
last year’s event, go to
runWell hoSpital boWlS club celebrateS 50 yearS
In glorious sunshine on Wednesday 4th July, Runwell Hospital
Bowls Club celebrated its 50th year, with a match against a team
of In-Pensioners from the Royal Hospital Chelsea.
Runwell Club President Mike Hammond, himself a founder
member, both Captains, Pam Petts and Dave Thomas and many
current members of the club welcomed The Chelsea Pensioners
to their bowls green at St Luke’s Park, Runwell. The Pensioners,
who were led by their bowls captain Walter Swan and Lt. Col.
Jonny Lowe, looked splendid as they arrived in their Scarlet
Uniforms.
After photographs had been taken Col. Lowe presented the Club
with a commemorative plaque. The visitors were then able to
remove their ‘Scarlets’, which are very warm and it was a very
hot day. After light refreshments they proceeded to the green
to play 18 ends of enjoyable bowls. The games were all played in
a friendly and pleasant, but competitive, spirit with no-one
taking any real notice of the final scores.
After supper, Walter thanked the club for the invitation, saying
that the day, with perfect weather, a perfect green, in pleasant
surroundings and good company had been most enjoyable. Mike
Hammond then presented Walter with a framed cross stitch
panel depicting Chelsea Pensioners and also a teddy bear dressed
as a Chelsea Pensioner, both of which had been made by his wife,
Brenda. Both Walter and Mike said that they were looking
forward to the return match, in Chelsea, in 2019.
DISTRICT SPORTS FIELD
EVENTS - On Tuesday 3rd
June, Maldon Court took
part in the Maldon District
Sports Field Events. Six
pupils competed in the
long jump, high jump and
ball throw, one boy and
one girl were entered into
every event. The
atmosphere was incredible, and the competition fierce. Maldon
Court performed to an elite level, demonstrating fantastic skill
and precision. We were thrilled to be placed 1st in three events
and 2nd in three events, making us Maldon District Sports Field
Event Champions for 2018. A big thank you to all the parents
who came to support us.
DISTRICT SPORTS TRACK EVENTS - Last week we saw our
selected Key Stage 2 children compete at the prestigious District
Sports athletics track events. The children competed in true
Maldon Court style with fantastic determination in all of their
races. The Relay Cup was the culmination of a superb day of
competition where both the boys and girls won with at least an
80m win over the four other schools. Wow! Well done to all
children and to Mrs Holden, Mrs Guest and our parent helpers
for all of their hard work training the children. It was most
certainly worth it, the children are now 2018 Maldon District
Field and Track Champions, Relay Champions and Overall
Athletics Champions, a truly remarkable achievement.
