spell of his genius. The Authorized Bible of the
English language is Tyndale’s, after his work
passed through two or three revisions.
So instant and so powerful was the influence of
Tyndale’s gift upon England, that Catholicism,
through those newly formed papal invincibles,
called the Jesuits, sprang to its feet and brought
forth, in the form of a Jesuit New Testament, the
most effective instrument of learning the Papacy,
up to that time, had produced in the English
language. This newly invented rival version
advanced to the attack, and we are now called to
consider how a crisis in the world’s history was
met when the Jesuit Bible became a challenge to
Tyndale’s translation.
