countries were radically overhauled and a new
meaning was read into words of Inspiration.
Three lines of results are strongly discernible as
features of the movement. First, “collation”
became the watchword. Manuscripts were laid
alongside of manuscripts to detect various readings
and to justify that reading which the critic chose as
the right one. With the majority of workers,
especially those whose ideas have stamped the
revision, it was astonishing to see how they turned
away from the overwhelming mass of MSS. and
invested with tyrannical superiority a certain few
documents, some of them of a questionable
character. Second, this wave of revision was soon
seen to be hostile to the Reformation.
There is something startlingly in common to be
found in the modernist who denies the element of
the miraculous in the Scriptures, and the Catholic
Church which invests tradition with an inspiration
equal to the Bible. As a result, it seems a
desperately hard task to get justice done to the
Reformers or their product. As Dr. Demaus says:
