nation only, but of all great nations, both ancient
and modern, is the Bible the basis of the
Constitution. It foretold the fall of Babylon; and
when that empire had disappeared, it survived. It
announced beforehand the creation of the empires
of Greece and Rome, and lived to tell their faults
and why they failed. It warned succeeding
kingdoms. All ages and continents have their life
inwrought into the fabric of this Book. It is the
handiwork of God through the centuries. Only
those whose records are lifted high above
suspicion, can be accepted as qualified to touch it.
Certainly no living being or any number of them
ever had authority to make such astounding
changes, as were made by those men who were
directly or indirectly influenced by the Oxford
Movement.
The history of the Protestant world is
inseparable from the Received Text. A single
nation could break loose and plunge into anarchy
and license. The Received Text shone high in the
heavens to stabilize surrounding peoples. Even
