Dean Farrar in his defense of the Revised
Version says that, in omitting the article in
(Hebrews 9:27), the Revisers changed the meaning
from the great and final judgment, to judgments in
the intermediate state (such as purgatory, limbo,
etc.), thus proving the intermediate state. From the
growing favor in which the doctrine of purgatory is
held, we believe the learned Dean had this in mind.
Pages of other examples could be given of how the
new rules can be used as a weapon against the
King James.
So the modern rules which they apparently
followed when it suited their theology, on the
“article,” the “tenses,: -- aorists and perfect, -- the
“pronoun,” the “preposition,” the “intensive,”
“Hebraisms,” and “parallelisms,” pave the way for
new and anti-Protestant doctrines concerning the
“Person of Christ,” “Satan,” “Inspiration of the
Bible,” “The Second Coming of Christ,” and other
topics dealt with later.
